Message Tile Gift Idea

     Sometime ago, I found a bunch of tiles sitting curbside (that's my subtle way of saying that I found them in somebody's trash).  I, of course, brought them home thinking that I could use them for something.
      Here's a quick and easy gift idea using one of these tiles- after all, Valentine's Day is coming.

 

My tile is 4 1/4" square.

I used rub-ons place the quote, "I love you because. . ." 

 

 

The dry erase marker easily wipes off so you can personalize the message every day.

 

You could make one for your whole family to use or one for each member of the family.

It would even make a good gift for grandparents. My boys are going to give one to my mom. I think she'll enjoy having this to exchange messages with the boys. Who knows what they'll write!

You could even give one as a teacher gift if you used a quote like, " You make me. . ." or "I like how you. . .".

 

Once you apply the letters, I suggest that you either glue magnets to the back or place it on a plate stand for display.

 

If you want to make one, all you need is

a tile (any size will do)

a set of rub-ons

dry erase marker

plate stand or magnets

Tiny Tile Photo Holder

     Here's an easy idea if you need a whole lot of gifts, but don't have much time or money to spend. I've made these twice for such occasions- Mother's Day gifts for the ladies of our church (they were gifts from the church, not from me:) and also Christmas gifts for my co-workers. I plan to make another batch before school is out for my son's teachers. He is in fifth grade, so this is the last year he'll be at this school. This way he can give all his teachers, including Art, Music, and P.E., a little something without us having to break the bank!

     All you need is a sheet of the mini tiles from a home improvement store like Lowe's. My tiles were 1 3/4" x 1 3/4". They come on a sheet of 20 or more for $5 or less. You'll also need clothes pins (think the dollar store), a glue gun, some stamps (check out the Target $1 section), and some Staz On ink (Hobby Lobby- use a coupon!).

     Now you just use your Staz On ink- this particular type of ink will not smear as opposed to other inks- to stamp an image on each tile. Once the ink is dry, you just glue a clothespin to the back of the tile with the clamping end upwards. Leave a little space between the bottom of the clothespin and the bottom of the tile so it will be able to stay propped up. (On my first attempt, I glued the clothespin even with the bottom of the tile, and it wouldn't stand up by itself.)

     If you like, you can tie a piece of ribbon to one leg of the clothespin (if you tie it around the whole clamp, the clothespin can't open).

     Voila! Place a photo in the clothespin and you have a cute little photo holder.

Another Tile Project

     Hello Everybody, hope you all had a good weekend. Ours was nice, but busy. Both boys are playing flag football- on the same team, which is great. They're both doing so well. Ethan, my younger son, loves football. He thinks he's ready for tackle football, but I'm not so sure that I am ready for him to play tackle football. Sam, my older son, actually had no interest in football. I made him play anyway- and he is really enjoying it! It is so nice to see him try something new and actually put effort into it! I am so proud of both of them.
     Today I decided to try another project with the bathroom tiles I told you about last week.

For this first one, I used my handy-dandy letter stamps and some Staz-On ink and just stamped a quote directly onto the tile. Then to add some color, I added the three tiny flowers with jeweled centers to the upper left corner and the larger flower with a button center and ticket leaves to the lower right corner.

For this one, I glued a piece of map to the tile before stamping a quote. Then I added the little red heart to he center. Sweet and simple.

I don't know if you can see, but I left the map covered tile next to the clock on my mantle. It seems to fit in there.

     This project is very do-able. It would be a great teacher gift idea!

Photos on Tiles

     One day while my family and I were out for a walk, I noticed a box of unused tiles sitting in a box by someone's trash. Well, I am not one to pass by something I could use- no matter where I find it. The box was so heavy, my hubby had to pick it up and since we were closer to my mom's house, we dropped the box off there. Eventually, the box made it to my house. And now the tile projects will begin!:) Here's the first one:

This is your basic 4.25"x4.25" bathroom tile. Can you see the potential here?

First, I cut a photo to size and put Mod Podge on the back of it and stuck it right in the center of the tile. Then I let it sit for about 15-20 minutes to let it dry. If you try to paint Mod Podge on top w/o giving the stuff underneath time to dry, you could end up with air bubbles.
Then I put a layer of Mod Podge on the top- painting it vertically. After some more drying time, I put another layer on top going horizontally. While the Mod Podge is drying, it looks hazy. Don't worry- it clears up when it's dry.

Painting on the Mod Podge 2 different directions gives it a canvas-like look when it dries.
I chose a photo of my parents, one of my dad with my younger son, and one of my mom with my older son as an Easter present for them. I placed the three tiles on little easels. Turned out pretty cute and was so simple!
