Wreath Review

After two days of temperatures that reached 80 degrees,

we had a cold front come through dropping the temperature to 47 today.

Yipes!

I can't complain though. . . I know many people are getting snow with their cold weather.

As I'm staying in and trying to stay warm, I thought we'd take a look back at some wreaths.

This is my personalized spring wreath.

It's just about time for me to get it back out.

I just love the bright colors- I think it looks so happy!

Would you believe that I spent less than $10 making it?

This wreath is made from a vintage rug beater that I got at a thrift store.

The wire rings worked great for holding photos.

The best thing about this jute wreath is that the fabric rosettes are on clips and are removable,

 so I can change out the different color rosettes with the seasons!

This vinyl record wreath is one of my favorites!

I think it's so unique and retro.

This final wreath is made from an embroidery hoop and holds photos and memorabilia.

It's super easy to make, lightweight, and so cute.

I think this one would make a great teacher gift or grandparent gift.

Thrifty Thursday #124

Have you hit any good yard sales lately?

The last couple of weekends, my neighborhood has had a slew of them!

Unfortunately, I've had busy Saturday mornings and haven't been able to check them out.

Not cool.

 

But my hubby and I were out and about recently and we got to stop at a yard sale. 

I didn't get anything, but he picked up this lovely afghan for $6.

The couple having the sale was older and the man said that his mom had made it.

I was surprised that they were selling it. (I would have treasured it if my mom had made it.)

Sometimes it's strange to see the kinds of things that people get rid of.

Anyway, my hubby is 6'5 and was pleased to see that this will be long enough

to cover him all the way up.

 

On my weekly (well, almost every week) jaunt to the thrift store, I found this lovely platter for $.75.

Old platters just make me happy.

I love using them when I bring baked goodies to a function.



 

I don't always find old gems like the above platter.

Sometimes I find useful stuff.

Although these aren't as exciting purchases to share with you, I still want to show you good deals:)

I never pass up graph paper at the thrift store. I got this practically new package for $.50.

I also got two bundles of staples for a quarter.

 

 

Another item I never pass up is metal embroidery hoops.

Love them.

This one was fifty cents.

They work great for mobiles- I've used one on a snowflake mobile.

I plan to use one to make a vintage silverware mobile. That will be cute, huh?

 

Well, I'm not working this Friday, so I'm hoping my neighborhood yard sale scene will be hopping this weekend. I hope you all have great luck in your neighborhoods, too!

Thrifty Thursday #91

Last Saturday, I got up bright and early to go to an estate sale. 

I usually intend to get up early and exercise and clean my house while still getting to a sale when it opens. Let me tell you. . . that has never happened . . . until last Saturday. My hubby had to work, so I got up when he did. I walked on the treadmill, swept and mopped my floors, and scrubbed my bathrooms before taking a shower- and I still made it to the 8:00 opening ten minutes early!

That was a real shocker for me.

And probably a one time only thing.

Anyway, the estate sale wasn't the best I've ever been to, but it was worth going to.

It was love at first sight when I spotted this old hair dryer. It didn't have a price, but was sitting next to a modern hairdryer that was marked two dollars,. I hoped that I could get the old one for the same price. When I asked how much it was, the lady said, "How about a dollar?" I was thinking, how about yes?!

Needless to say, I bought it. 

When I brought it home, I plugged it in and it actually works!

I'm thinking I might want to turn it into a night light for the bathroom. What do you think?

If you've followed my Thrifty Thursday post for any length of time, you're probably looking at this platter thinking that the last thing I need is another platter.

Well, you may be right, but this one has a handle on it. None of my other platters do! 

Plus this was only fifty cents.

I've already used it once since I bought it:)

These two metal embroidery hoops were both a dollar. I never pass these up because I think they're so unique. I plan to make several mobiles with these. 

These two dainty pink doilies were a dollar apiece. 

Aren't they pretty?

There were quite a few pieces of old jewelry. I rifled through until I found some pieces I liked.

I got these two broaches and the necklace below for $5.

There was practically no wear on these pieces. 

I also picked up some old books at this sale. I have a project in mind for Christmas, so I'm needing titles that are "Christmas-y." I was able to find two.

Not too shabby for $10.50 if I do say so myself!

Thrifty Thursday #73

     My, oh my, do I have a big haul to show you this week! It was a good day to stop into the thrift store!

 

I found this contraption and fell in love- it's a necklace hanger mounted to a china plate.

I've been wanting to make one of these, but I don't know how to drill through glass. This fella was only fifty cents!

 

I love quirky notepads.

They make cute pages for mini albums or great cards for journaling on scrapbook pages. Even though this pad was half gone, what was left was in good shape. It was worth the quarter:)

 

This plant hanger was only a quarter, too. I got it for my brother who loves plants. He has enough that he could open a nursery! He just keeps buying them and buying them. It takes him two hours to water them all. I told him that sounds more like work than a hobby!

 I thought this one for choir gowns was pretty unique.  

 

I've told you before that I never pass up embroidery hoops - especially at a quarter apiece. You just never know when one will come in handy, so I try to keep some on hand.

There's a darling project I've been wanting to make with them. Hopefully I'll be able to get to it within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned:)

 

I found this large beautiful China platter for a dollar.

I got it for my friend who's wanting some cute platters.

 

This set of metal plates was only fifty cents. I'm not for sure what I'm going to do with them, but I couldn't pass them up. I think they might make cute key rings.

 

There was a box of free stuff out in front of the thrift store. I got this double album set.

 

That's quite a load for a stop at one thrift store- and it didn't even cost me four dollars! I hope you have such bountiful luck with your secondhand shopping this week.

Thrifty Thursday #65

     For some reason, my last few weeks have felt extra hectic. I haven't been able to fit in the fun stuff. Does that ever happen to you? It's like I've just been chasing my tail! Ah, well, such is the life of a mom:)
     Fortunately, I did get to take about ten minutes and pop into my favorite resale shop. It was worth the time and the money I spent!

 

I found this beautiful old spool for $.75.

It's going to go on my mantle next to my other giant spool.

 

I got this bolt of pretty white lace for a quarter!

 

I fell in love with this silver tray.

It's about 12 inches across by 7.5 inches wide.

For fifty cents it is mine to do with as I wish! I'll find some cute project to use it in.

I've been wanting to get a silver tray that I can use for a magnet board. This guy unfortunately isn't magnetic, but that's ok. I would've bought him anyway.

I need to put a magnet in my purse so I can test what I find.

 

I always pick up embroidery hoops when I find them.

This one is about eight inches across and only cost a quarter.

 I have a few "hoop" projects on my to-do list.

 

I got these brand new bags of confetti for a quarter each.

Next month, I get to help decorate for a graduation party.

Guess what the school colors are? That's right: red and black!

I'd have paid more than a quarter for a bag of this at Party City!

 

I picked this up for a quarter.

Who among us can't use a little improvement? I know I can use some:)

 

This was my favorite find of the day.

They're old pendants. Not for sure how old, though.

The original price tags were still on them.

I can't wait to do something with them!

Thrifty Thursday #58

     This past weekend my hubby and I went to an estate sale with some friends. They had been wanting to go to one and we just so happened to know where one was.

     It was the last hour of the last day of the sale. Prime time for deal making!

 

I found these two mini teacups- one with a saucer.

Each piece was marked fifty cents, but the lady let me have them all for a dollar.

These will get washed up and given to my friend who has me looking for teacups for a project she plans to do.

 

I loved the look of this old worn out cigar box. I think I paid $1 for it.

I plan to store my washi tape collection in it.

 

Love these spoons with the flower cut outs! They're perfect for serving spoons.

I got the whole set for $2.

 

I cannot pass up embroidery hoops. I like to keep them on hand for projects.

Got all these for one dollar!

 

If you stopped by last week, you saw that I came by an old record player. I'll probably give these records a spin before turning them into party decor.

I paid four dollars for all of these.

 

     As usual, my hubby and I had a great time browsing the estate sale. I think our friends did, too. I explained to them that sometimes you find awesome stuff and sometimes you strike out. You just never know til you go!

Snowflake Mobile

     My grandma loves to crochet. Whenever she comes to see us, she brings her yarn and crochet needles and make doilies while she visits. She has given all of her grandchildren a crocheted afghan. 
     Many years ago, she gave my parents a set of crocheted snowflakes, then my mom gave them to me to use as Christmas tree ornaments. This year while hanging them on my tree, I thought there had to be something more I could do with them.
     Hence, my snowflake mobile . . .

     In addition to my grandma's six snowflakes, I also used three tiny crocheted doilies that I got at a thrift store.

     First, I used fabric stiffener on all of them.

     Then, using ribbon, I tied them to a small metal embroidery hoop. Have you ever seen one of these before? I hadn't til a lady from church gave me a couple. How cool are they? I love the metal look, so I didn't even consider covering the hoop.
     To finish it off, I tied three lengths of tulle to the hoop, then tied them together at the top so the mobile can be hung.

 

     I think this will be pretty hanging throughout the winter- especially since we don't get real snow here!

Vintage Photo Mobile

     Hi Guys, I am so excited about today's project! I've had the idea on my mind for awhile, so I finally sat down and made it.

     It's a vintage photo mobile!

     I got these photos at a couple of different estate sales. I hate to see that they weren't kept by the families.

     When I told my son where I got them, I mentioned how much I treasure old stuff. He responded with, "Almost too much." He does not share this fondness with me. :)

     Look at some of these pictures. . .

 Aren't they amazing?

    We don't have much for heirlooms in our family, so I think it's such a shame when other people don't appreciate theirs.

     My hubby hung the mobile over my piano- I think that's the perfect place for it.

     This photo mobile idea would look great with baby photos, too. How cute would one of these be in a nursery? Or for a wedding? Or for a birthday or anniversary party?

     If you'd like to make one, determine how many photos you want to use. I used twenty-three with four quotes and one piece of pattern paper (I had one odd size photo and didn't want a plain mat on the back).

     Mat all the photos on black card stock with photos on both sides of the mat. This means you will have two pictures back to back. I attached mine with photo corners. This way the photos are able to be removed in the future, and it adds to the vintage look.

     Using short pieces of jute, tie photos into four columns. I used separate pieces of jute to attach each photo to the next one. I used the small hole punch side of my Cropadile to make the holes through which to tie the jute.

     I placed my quotes in two of the columns.

     Once you have four columns of photos tied together, space them out evenly and tie them to an embroidery hoop (I used a 10" hoop). I then covered my hoop with jute. This was time consuming, but was worth it. I just used about a foot of jute at a time wrapping it tightly around the hoop applying hot glue every so often.

     Now you just use lace or tulle (I stacked both together) and place three 18" strands spaced evenly around the hoop. Then tie them together at the top making a loop to hang the mobile.

     Ta-da! Worth the effort, huh? If you make one, I'd love for you to e-mail me some photos!

Embroidery Hoop Photo Display

     I can't believe July is almost over- yipes! This summer is flying by! Speaking of summer, if you have photos from your summer outings, here's a quick and easy display you can make out of an embroidery hoop and some clothes pins.

I got my embroidery hoop at a yard sale. Whenever I see one at a yard sale or thrift store, I pick it up. You just never know when you'll need one:)

Anyway, to make this, you need 10-12 clothespins. I covered mine with decorative scrapbook paper. Then I used a glue gun and spaced them out on the hoop. You need to alternate which direction they are facing- the first one faces out, the second one faces in, the third one faces out, and so on. That way you'll have enough room to place your photos.

I glued flowers to a couple of the clothes pins.

To make a hanger, you just use a long piece of ribbon. Center it over the pin of the hoop.

I made this one for me. I think I'll hang it in the front entry with photos and love notes.

I don't have a spot to show off recent photos. This will work just fine for that.

Here's one I made for a friend's birthday.

This would be a cute way to show off birthday cards or Christmas cards. It would make a wonderful grandparent or teacher gift. It could also be an inspiration board.
