Flowers for My Hair

     Yay! It's Friday at last! My son and I just finished up his online school yesterday- I don't know which one of us is more excited to be done:)
     I have an easy tutorial to show you today. I got this idea from a friend (Thanks Wen!).

It's an easy flower clip for your hair.

To make it you'll need

a felt circle about the size of the top of a soda can

fabric glue- I use Fabri-Tac

a length of rosette trim- got mine at Hobby Lobby

an alligator clip for your hair (mine has a flat top)

glue gun

Using your fabric glue, start gluing the rosettes along the outer edge of the felt circle. About half of the rosette should hang off the felt.

Keep gluing around the edge until the circle is complete. Then leaving one rosette attached, trim the rest of the tail off. Glue this last rosette to the center of the circle.

This is what it will look like.

The last step is glue the alligator clip to the back side of the felt circle using a glue gun.

Ta-da! Doesn't that look easy? I just love wearing flowers in my hair. It makes me happy:)

Thrifty Thursday #20

     Hard to believe it's Thursday again- even harder to believe that it's June 7th!
     Here are my treasures for the week, thanks to my favorite thrift store:

 I found this beautiful crocheted lap blanket for $1! I couldn't believe the price- somebody spent a lot of time making this blanket. I felt it needed a good home. 

 I also found these wooden utensils. I thought I'd use the forks and discard the knives- imagine my surprise when I opened the package and saw that they are connected and spread open like this! I bought all ten packs for a quarter each.

Sounds like a silly purchase, huh? But it's not, actually. My church has a scrap booking group that I teach and our next project is going to be a recipe themed book. I thought these things would look delightful attached to the front of the books! 

As I was leaving, I noticed that there was a box of books labeled "Free." Naturally, I stopped to paw through and see what there was. I found these three books with dust jackets which I promptly removed. I love the colors! I'm actually thinking that the covers of these books would probably make cute covers for the recipe scrapbooks.

Layout of the Week #16- Using Paint in Scrapbooking

     I'm a little late with my post tonight- but I guess late is better than not at all! This has just been a crazy last two weeks- whew! My older son does online public school at home which means I am his teacher. We follow the pre-done plans; therefore, he hasn't had any down time these last few days of school which means I haven't had any down time either! It has been business as usual.
     Anyway, that's the main reason I've been posting later in the evening lately.
     This week for the Layout of the Week, I thought we'd do some painting on our layouts.

 You'll need:

                                                         one piece of 12"x12" card stock
                                                           4-5 pieces of pattern paper
                                                                   foam letter stamps
                                                                empty toilet paper tube

                                                                             paint
                                                                         paintbrush
                                                                           trimmer
                                                                           adhesive

Now cut the first piece of pattern paper down to 7 1/2"x 12" and adhere it about two inches from the top of the card stock. Then take the rest of your pattern paper and cut five strips 1/2"x 12". Adhere two of them to the bottom of the pattern paper. Adhere one to the top. Take the last two and trim one down to 6" long  and the other to 4" long. Layer them on top of the pattern paper towards the right side. There's no wrong way to do this-just stick them on there.

Time for the paint!  Just place some pain on the edge of the toilet paper roll. 

Press and twist the roll along the top strips of pattern paper and three along the left side of the bottom strips as well. You need to reapply paint for every circle.

Now you need to place some paint on your foam letters.

Firmly press the letters down. The paint doesn't have to look perfect- it adds to the handmade charm!

This is what it should look like.

Add your photos. I trimmed mine down so several would fit. You could place two 4"x6" horizontal pictures along the left edge if you'd rather.

Add journalling to the bottom right corner of the pattern paper. I used a label maker. If you'd like, you could place an embellishment at the bottom of the photo on the left and another one near the top right corner.

Note: Vidiot is a term my hubby came up with for my boys who sometimes spend too much time playing video games. V+ idiot= Vidiot

This layout actually shows that everybody in the family enjoys playing video games with the boys.:)

Here is one more layout using paint- the yellow dots around the page were painted on, as were the green circles peeking out from behind the photos. I also dragged a paint brush along the outside edge of the card stock with several different colors of paint.

Recipe of the Week #20- Chicken Enchilada Fold-Overs

Chicken Enchilada Fold-Overs

1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken

1 10 oz can red enchilada sauce

1 can Pilsbury pizza crust

1/2 cup cheddar cheese or taco seasoned cheese

Heat oven to 425. Mix chicken and 1/2 cup enchilada sauce.

Unroll dough and put on a cookie sheet. Starting at the center, press the dough into a 14"x10" rectangle. Cut into four rectangles.

Spoon 1/3 cup of the chicken mixture onto half of each rectangle. Spread to within 1/2" of the edge. Sprinkle 2 Tbsp of cheese over chicken.

Fold dough in half over the filling. Press the edges firmly with a fork to seal. Prick tops with fork.

Bake 10-12 minutes or til golden brown.

Heat remaining enchilada sauce and use as a dipping sauce.

My family raved about this dish- definitely a repeat recipe!

Note: this is a photo of my hubby's plate- I always add extra "seasoning" for him. I added 2 different kinds of  peppers and green onions- all homegrown from his garden.

Lamp Shade Re-do

     Recently I was browsing in a cute gift store that we have here in town. They always have the neastest stuff. I get lots of ideas for things to make, but like with Pinterest, these ideas usually just stay in my head. But not this time! I found something that I decided that I had to make--a lace lampshade.

This is the lampshade that I made. It turned out a lot like the one in the store; unfortunately, I don't have a photo of that inspiration project. 

I bought this lampshade at the thrift store for $2. Then I paired it up to a lamp that I had at home that was in need of a shade. I stripped off the old shade from the frame-I made slices with a box cutter and peeled it off.

Then I got out my drawer of lace and tied strips all around the frame. I trimmed the tails to be the same length. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It didn't take too long to do and the price was just right! (This item at the gift store was $90!)
If you want to make one and don't have a large supply of lace, you can watch for lace at thrift stores or yard sales (I've found plenty like that) or you could always get your 40% off coupon and head over to Hobby Lobby!

Fabric Rosette Necklace Tutorial

 I love making fabric rosettes- when I first started making them, I rolled them too tight and didn't like how they looked. So I practiced and loosened my twists, and now I'm happier with the results.
 Today I'm going to make one and attach it to a necklace.

This is the project I'm going to show you how to make.

You'll need: 

a strip of fabric 1"wide by 30" long

             felt circle ( about the size of a silver dollar)

jump ring

 necklace

    fabric glue

 glue gun

First you need to tie a knot at one end of the fabric.

Now tuck the tail under the knot and start loosely twisting the long tail. Apply fabric glue about every half inch to hold the fabric in place. I suggest you put the glue down low towards the back so it won't show once you're done.

Keep gluing and twisting. Once there's about an inch or less left, fold the tail underneath and glue it down with the fabric glue.

This is what the flower will look like.

Use the glue gun to attach the felt circle to the back of the flower. This will help keep the flower together and will keep the tail down. 

Attach a jump ring perpendicular to the flower so it will lay flat on your chest.

Now place it on the necklace. Voila! Wasn't that easy?

Here's another look at it layered with a bead necklace. I just love brown and turquoise together!
