Thrifty Thursday #229

The thrift store was having a book sale-

12 books for a dollar.

So, naturally, I had to go through all their books.
Here's what I found. . . 

I loved this little book.

It doesn't have a copyright date, but it is definitely book.

 

I picked up this Worship Hymnal. Even thought I have several, I can never pass these up.

This old Reader's Digest book is in great shape. I'll probably turn it into a journal.

I picked up the second book because I thought it looked like a good read.

This is a Mother's Encyclopedia. It's full of medical info.

I'll use it for papercrafting.

I am a sucker for old textbooks. This one was printed in 1967.

I also got this 1967 Reading textbook.

I love the graphics in these old books.

This paperback was printed in1951.

Once again, I was drawn to the graphics.

I was intrigued by the title of this book.

It's filled with written instructions on several different dance steps.

Cute, huh?

It was printed in 1962.

This pages of this book and the earlier encyclopedia will become pages in a junk journal.

I love the fun element they add.

It was printed in 1966.

 

I didn't find this book too interesting until I opened it up. . .



and saw the reprinted ads inside. Isn't this cool?
 

While this was a slow week of secondhand finds, I am tickled with each of these books I got.

My hubby and I went to an estate sale in town last Saturday.
We started off in the garage which is one of my favorite shopping spots at an estate sale.
I never know what I'll find in them.

Like this awesome old adding machine.
It still has its old roll of paper on the back.
It was marked $8, but we were there on the last day which meant everything was half off.
My hubby lugged this heavy thing around the rest of the house while we finished looking.

As I started walking through the house, I came across a pile of old games.
I picked up this one for $2 (after the discount).

Check out the game board.
So retro:)

I also picked up this one for $2.

I just love vintage games.

Wouldn't these look cute hanging on a wall in a game room?

Another prime location at an estate sale is the office.
I always spend lots of time looking at the office supplies.
I got this extra long clipboard,

all these large white envelopes,

this old ledger book,

and this awesome old ledger book for $3!
Score!

Here's the inside of the book.
I actually saw a lady pick this up and carry it around for awhile.
I watched her making sure she was going to get it.
Much to my delight, she set it back down, so I swooped over to get it.

I also got two old yardsticks for a dollar each.

My hubby didn't get anything, but I walked out of there with two armfuls of stuff and only spent $13.
Gosh, I love estate sales.

The other day, I swung by Goodwill with a trunk full of stuff to donate.

Naturally while I was there, I had to take a buzz through the store.
I don't go there as often as you'd think I would.

I am so glad I did.

Check out what I found. . .
 

I rarely buy secondhand purses or clothes, but today I made an exception

when I found this brand new Sakroots purse for $7.99.

It came with a key ring and small matching bag.

It literally had no wear. I love the happy print.

Would you believe that I was needing a new purse? I was excited all day about this score.

I was also thrilled when I spotted this metal receipt holder.

It isn't vintage- it's a replica. Nevertheless, I love it.

I'm excited to do something with it, I'm just not sure what. I'm thinking photo display. . .

It was $6.

My third find was this vintage Pyrex mixing bowl for $2.
It's small, but in great shape.
My teenage sons love to use my mixing bowls to eat cereal out of.
 I prefer when they choose a smaller size bowl like this.

I can't believe the three fantastic things I walked out of Goodwill with.
 I will have to stop there more often!

Two Saturdays ago, I headed out all excited hoping to have a morning full of yard sale-ing.

I cruised my neighboring area and didn't find any sales.

There were only two yard sales advertised in the paper; only one was any good.

Isn't that funny that when you have time on a Saturday to go to garage sales,

 there aren't any to be found?

One of the two I went to was at a storage unit- it was actually in a large building

 on the same land as the storage units.

I spotted this scale, but it was marked $15 and I didn't want to spend that much.

The gal running the sale said she was up for making deals.

I asked if she'd take ten dollars for the scale. She said sure.

Then I found this slide carousel tray.

It was marked five dollars, but she took two for it.

 

While I was wandering the aisles of stuff, I spotted this metal thing.

I sent my hubby a text asking if he'd turn it into a light for me.

It took him awhile to answer, so I ended up having to go back for it.

This four dollar piece of some kind of metal will make a rather unique light fixture!

I was tickled with my purchases.

Last Saturday, the Junk Hippy show was in town.

I had a great time looking around.

There was booth after booth of cute stuff, junk, and antiques.

I didn't pick up much, but I saw lots of good stuff.

Here's what I brought home.

I got a bag full of vintage Bingo cards for $10.
There were eighty-three cards in the bag!!!
Woo-hoo!

I also got this cool metal plate for $1.
I figure I'll attach it to a piece of furniture or a repurposed piece.
It measures 3 1/2"x 4".

My last purchase was these two cool old keys for a dollar each.
Not sure yet how I'll use them, but I thought they were cool.

That's all I got, but there was so much to see. I had a great time shopping.

Thrifty Thursday #224

I recently went to an estate sale and actually had the opportunity to make it to their pre-sale.
(A pre-sale is when they open on Thursday afternoon before the official sale
that runs Friday through Saturday.)

I didn't find anything big. I did, however, score some good office supplies.

 

I love old stamps.

I got these for $1 each.

I never pass up ledger paper- even it it's not vintage.

I got the pad of ledger paper for fifty cents and the graph paper pad for a dime.

 

I got this bundle of chipboard for fifty cents.

 

I also got a bunch of envelopes for $1.

I was loving the bottom envelopes. They're not your average size envelopes: they're 5 x 11 1/2".

The last thing I picked up is this tin of Brasso.
When I was in the Army, we used this stuff quite a bit on doorknobs and belt buckles.
I have a few old pewter pieces that I'd like to try to clean up.

Sometimes when I hit an estate sale pre-sale, I plan to go back on the last day to see what I can get at half price. I didn't see anything that I wanted to go back for this time, but I was glad I stopped.

Thrifty Thursday #223

A Goodwill store recently opened in my town.

I've been a couple of times, and while it is incredibly clean and organized,

I feel that their prices are a little high.

This time around, I did find two things.
 

The first was this awesome old Scrabble Sentence Cube Game.

The dice have words on them. How cool is that?

I paid $4 for it. (Usually I get old games for a dollar or two. See what I mean about the prices?

But I felt this one was worth paying a little more.)

I also got this bag of four plastic vials for $2.
They're about four inches high.
They were so cool and unique, I couldn't pass them up.

After this visit, I've decided that I need to pop into Good will more often.

Vintage Market Days Review

I live in a town near Houston, and this area seems to have become a hot spot for junk shows.
You have to know that I am loving this!

I went to one this past weekend called Vintage Market Days.
 It was a delightful show.

They had rows and rows of booths set up at our local fairgrounds.

It cost $5 to get in and it was definitely worth the price of admission.

There was a line to get in, but it moved very quickly.

Some booths had new items, but many, like this one, had awesome vintage stuff.

I saw lots of Pyrex, old windows, vintage thermoses. . . .

The prices were reasonable.

I loved all these old tins.

I've never seen a wooden piece like this.
I thought it was so beautiful.

Check out the metal drawers.
I also like the wooden crate sitting on the drawers.

There were handmade items as well.

Check out the trough full of lights made from chicken feeders!
I'm thinking I should've gotten one of these for over my kitchen sink.

I'm a sucker for benches.

This shelf was made with the ends of a crib.
I just love it. I think it would be a great kitchen island.

I love any kind of unusual light fixture.
