These Boots Were Made For Walking!

What do you get when you mix a little bit of lace, leather cording, and cowboy boots?
A whole lotta cute, that's what!

 
These lace cuffs were super easy to make.
Cut a piece of lace that fits around the base of the boot.
Apply Fray Check to the cut edges of the lace so it doesn't start to fray.
Then thread the leather cord through the lace holes.

Tie the leather at the back then leave about an inch of cording
and make another knot at the bottom on each side.

Lace Table Runner

I am fortunate to have quite a collection of ribbons and lace.

Several years ago, I was given a huge supply of it.

I've been wanting to get into my drawer of lace and do something with it.

 I ended up with a lace table runner.

I started with several types of lace- some wide, some narrow- and started sewing them 

to one another. 

I added a short strip of lace at each end to finish it off.

It turned out very elegant.

I love the looks of all the different styles.

Originally I intended for it to be a scarf, but I felt it made a better table runner.

Especially after my hubby saw me wearing it and said, "It looks like you're getting ready to give Communion in the Catholic church." :)

Thrifty Thursday #143

I always enjoy a jaunt through a thrift store.

I home-school my kids, so sometimes this is what I do to get a little "me" time.

This and swinging by Sonic Happy Hour for a big Diet Coke:)

Here's what I found this week. . . 

I got this stack of books for ten cents apiece.

Not for their reading potential, but for a little project I have in mind.

I got this bundle of pretty lace for fifty cents.

I think I'll use it for gift wrapping.

This bolt of lace was fifty cents, too.

It's beige with some rose colored edging- very pretty and very vintage looking.

I'm not sure what I'll use this for. . . maybe on a pillow?

 I think most people would have passed up these metal rings, but not me.

No Sir-ree-bob!

I got four of them for fifty cents.

They will become a mobile of some sort.

Can't wait:)

Last, but not least, I got this old measuring tape for a quarter.

 One thrift store's junk is this gal's treasure!

Thrifty Thursday #135

Happy Thursday, my thrifty friends!

Did you stop by to see what treasures I dug up during my weekly thrift store run?

I got this matching dinner and salad plate set for $1.25. The bright red color beckoned me.

I like to keep nice plates on hand for when I take a dessert to a friend- that way they don't have to return the plates to me. Somebody is going to love these! :)

One of the thrift stores in town relocated to a brand new building at the end of the summer. I don't go there as often as I used to go to their previous location which is strange because the
new one is much nicer.

Anyway, I did stop in and take a look around. 

I picked up these three books for fifty cents apiece.

They're now in a stack to be turned into junk journals (their covers and some interior pages will be made into scrapbooks like these)

I think the dictionary and thesaurus will make especially cute covers.

 This is the third incomplete set of small foam balls that I've gotten for a dime.

I now have enough to make a cute garland.

 

While out and about last Saturday morning, I stopped into one yard sale.

I got this 6" beautiful beige lace.

I think it may get turned into lacy boot socks.

 

I couldn't pass up this bag of random crocheted pieces- I especially love the flowers in front.

It was priced $1 and labeled as "Nana's work."

Chalkboard Banner DIY

I sure do love a cute banner.

I think they're one of the easiest things to make.

I've made several different ones out of sheet music, paint chips, and shipping tags,

and today I'm showing a chalkboard one.

  

Here it is.

 

I started with two pieces of chalkboard paper
 (I got this in the specialty paper section at Hobby Lobby).

 

Then I used a large index card and made a fold on one of the short sides right in the middle.

This gave me a guide to make my triangle.

I just lined up a ruler with that spot and each of the opposite corners.
Then I cut along those lines.

This created a nice triangle to use for my template.

 

I was able to get four triangles off of each 12"x12" piece of chalkboard paper.

 

Once I cut them all out, I got a long piece of lace and used my sewing machine to sew the triangles onto the lace.

 

 

I love the look of the lace with the black pennants.

 

If you don't want to sew, you could hot glue or staple the paper to the lace.

 

 

This is a very versatile banner as it can be personalized for any get together!

Embellished Decanter

Yesterday I showed you a cute vintage bottle that I picked up while thrifting.

While the bottle itself has lots of character, I added some embellishments to it.

This is how it started out.

It only cost me $1.25.

I wrapped some twine around the neck of the bottle. (It was at this point that my hubby told me that it looked like a pirate bottle.)

Then I tied on a little lace and dangled an old skeleton key.

For a final touch, I added a green pearl.

 (After these additions, my hubby declared that looked less pirate-y.)

I'm going to place it on a shelf in our dining room.

I think it would also be cute holding a slender candle.

Any other ideas about what I could do with it?

Thrifty Thursday #111

Every Thursday, I bring you photos of unique treasures that I've picked up while secondhand shopping. Even though it appears like I find something every time I go to the thrift store or garage sale, it's not actually like that. I'm not that lucky:)

I've been to two estate sales, two thrift stores, and one yard sale within the last week, and didn't buy a thing at any of them.

As I tell my kids, sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't! (Remember that from the old Almond Joy commercials? You wouldn't believe how often I work a commercial jingle into my conversations:)

 

 

Anyway, last week I did have a successful outing at the local thrift stores.

Isn't this doily beautiful?! I only paid $.50 for it.

 

I got this platter for fifty cents.

It's not real silver, but I keep a few of these on hand for decorating.

Have you ever tried putting a couple of old books on an old silver platter?

Take my word for it- it's cute!

 

I believe this is a hot pad as it's rather thick for a doily.

Fifty cents.

That handiwork is amazing, eh?

 

I paid another fifty cents for this partially used bolt of lace.

For some reason, I love buying lace in bulk.

 

 

I found yet another silver platter. This one is heavy duty, so it cost $1.50.

I know it needs a good cleaning, but I'm up for the challenge.

I really love the trim around the edges.

 

 

I got this old pendant for $1.50.

The back of this guy is a tiny mirror.

I'd really like to figure out how to switch out the rose on here for a different color.

 

Last, but not least, I found this old leather belt for a dollar.

One of these days, I'm going to sit down and turn my thrifted leather belts into bracelets.

Denim and Lace Bridal Shower Decor

This past weekend, I had the honor of helping to decorate for a wedding shower.
The bride's wedding colors are denim and lace, so that's the color scheme
that my friend and I used to decorate for the shower.

At the gift table, we set a mini suitcase with a banner that said "Cards" (far right).

Then we used a large wooden cake stand and placed some denim colored wooden letters with the happy couple's initials, some denim and lace covered balls, and some candles.

Below the cake stand are two embroidery hoops filled with denim and lace.

This would be an easy idea to replicate for any party as a way to incorporate

some color into the decor.

Around the edge of the table, we placed a denim and lace garland.

I made this by cutting strips of lace and denim and attaching them to a piece of ribbon.

Easy-peasy.

A vintage suitcase holds the plates and cutlery.

It looks awesome paired with a vase of flowers and a lacy curtain. 

My friend has amazing decorating skills! I just brought some decorating

stuff- she worked the magic with it!

Isn't this cake lovely? It was made to look like a tree trunk with the couple's name carved in it.

The L-O-V-E letters are printed on burlap and placed in mini frames (my friend's creation).

This is the sign-in area. Notice the embroidery hoop with denim in the background.

In the silver bucket are hearts cut from denim, filled with stuffing, and hot glued around the edges. How cute is that? Another brilliant idea of my friend:)

Check out the quilt hoop in the background- it's denim covered with part of a vintage crocheted lace blanket on top. So pretty- and so easy!
Notice two more denim hearts near the vase.

What do you think? It didn't take much preparing ahead of time as all the decorations that we made were easy.  I have to say that the whole thing came together pretty quickly. I think my friend and I make a good team:)

Christmas Centerpieces and Vintage Decor

Last week I got to help two of my good friends decorate for a Christmas banquet. 

We had seven tables and two counter tops that needed to be made pretty.

We wanted to keep it low cost, but highly cute.

We planned for a shabby, old-fashioned Christmas look by bringing stuff from our houses and blending it together for these centerpieces.

Take a look and see what you think. . .

 

This was on the main counter top amid the fixings for fajitas.

We used lots of mason jars filled with cranberries, greens, and floating candles.

 

Hanging along the bottom edge of the counter was this tea-stained vintage lace garland and a garland of cranberries.

 

This was arranged on the dessert bar.

Don't you just love those large lanterns?

See the book page garland strewn throughout the arrangement?

The red candles were painted with Mod Podge and rolled in Epsom salts to get that "snowy" look.

 

The kids had made the paper bag angels, so we made them the focus of several of the arrangements.

You'll notice more cranberries here.

In each arrangement, we used Scrabble tiles spelling out words in tile holders.

 

 

This was on the table as you first entered.

There's three candles and a vintage book photo holder displaying two old postcards.

We used lots of burlap and old doilies and lace throughout.

 

For smaller arrangements, we paired up vintage books with teacups that we used as candle holders.

One of my friends thought up the idea of using teacups like that and I just love that look!

 

I adore the look of the wood rounds and the green moss.

 

We used Scrabble tiles like confetti and sprinkled them around all the arrangements.

 Sweet and simple, huh?

 

More vintage books

 

We incorporated an old film canister as a tray beneath this arrangement.

 

This is my old yard sale birdhouse that we used for a centerpiece.

How cute is it paired with old books and candles?

 

Most the centerpieces contained similar items, just arranged differently.

 

We used maroon and white tablecloths and beautiful burlap table runners.

 

This buffet is beautiful on its own, but we upped it's loveliness with a vintage book table runner, candles, and this awesome typewriter (which isn't mine, but I wish it was!).

 

Finally, this is the corner that was set up for family photos.

I love the vintage feel between the burlap, cranberries, lace, and old books.

 

When we finished decorating, I told my friends that they need to come to my house and decorate my living room like this!

 

P.S. Want to know how much of this stuff came from thrift stores and yard sales?

Well, I'll tell you: the film canisters, all the old books, the Christmas blocks in the first photo, the tall silver candle sticks, the vegetable graters (in the above photo), all the tea cups, one of the wooden bowls, the Scrabble tiles, the jar of keys, and the large green bird house!

Who says you can't decorate with stuff from secondhand stores?!? :)
