Distressed Black Chair

A couple of months ago, I bought a freshly painted black chair at a yard sale.
I intended to place it at our kitchen table.
We have a collection of mismatched chairs.
I find it endearing. :)

Here's how it looks now.

Here's how it started out.
It had a thorough, heavy coat of black paint.

Using my hand sander, I sanded the entire chair 

focusing along the edges.

The chair was painted white before it was black, so some of the sanded areas showed the white paint

while others were sanded down to the natural wood.

I was tickled with how distressed and worn it turned out.

Wooden Chair Makeover

I found a cool weathered and worn wooden chair at a yard sale for $5.

My hubby and I loved it at first sight.

Here's how it looks now.

Here's how it started off.

I liked how worn it looked.

My hubby said to leave it be.

But I had my sander out. . .

and I thought that I would just sand it a little.

Well, I sanded and sanded

until I got this.

Then I thought that the wood looked so dry and well, thirsty.

So I applied one coat of Hemp Oil.

I love how it looks now.

Not only is it pretty, but it's completely sturdy.
(unlike some chairs I've bought secondhand!)

Thrifty Thursday #189

There is an older lady in a nearby neighborhood who has a garage sale twice a year.

And her sales are a-mazing!

She runs them for three days, Thursday through Saturday,

and she always has great stuff.

Not only that, but she sets up darling vignettes with her stuff.

My hubby and I were so excited when we happened across her sale last weekend.

Wait til you see what we got.

We picked up this wooden chair for $6.

We have an eclectic mix of chairs around our kitchen table.

With two teenage sons who like to lean back on chairs, we go through them faster than I'd like to.

This guy will fit right in with the rest.

How cool is this old wine box?

It cost me $2.

When I spotted this awesome card/photo holder, I snatched it right up.

I don't know if it's old, but it's certainly cute.

It was $6.

I think it will end up on my wall holding vintage photos. 

(Please forgive the ugly cooler in the background, but I had to put it against something 

that would make the rack show up.)

This lovely rusted rake head was $2.

I've turned one of these into a fall wreath.

Not sure what I'll do with this one yet.

I got this small glass mixing bowl for $1.

My hubby has a real love for cast iron skillets. I can't actually tell you why. . .

Maybe it's because his mom used one while he was growing up.

This was $8 and was in pretty good shape.

My hubby was excited to get it that he went right home and reconditioned it right away.

We picked up $26 worth of stuff. 

I wasn't going to barter with this old gal because I really like her.

She started adding up our stuff and reduced the prices on everything. She only charged us $18.

How awesome is that?

Vintage Chair Turned Chalkboard Easel

I picked up some rusty vintage metal chairs at a yard sale.
I thought that I could pull them out when we have company.
Once my hubby sat on one and decided that they weren't fit for sitting,
I knew I'd have to come up with some use for them.

So I painted the seat and back with chalkboard paint.
When you partially open it, it sits like an easel.

I left the rest of the chair in it's shabby glory.

It would be cute propped against something or hung on a wall as a message center.
Cute, unique--- and useful!

Chairs, Chairs, Everywhere There's Chairs. . .

Among other things, I have a fondness for chairs. More specifically: cute, old chairs.

Over the years, I've brought home several- much to my hubby's dismay.
He always says we don't have room for another chair. Somehow, I find space:)

Like for this cute blue one that sits in the corner of our living room.

It was already painted the right shade of blue.

Even better- it only cost me five dollars at a thrift store.

(FYI: the shutter on the wall came from a yard sale

and the afghan in the basket came from a thrift store.)

Just around the corner from the blue chair is this darling old blue desk.
Would you believe that it was that color when I bought it?
It's like it was designed for my living room.
I got this fella for five dollars at a yard sale.

My hubby was with me when I spotted this corner chair at an estate sale. I thought it was so unique.

I have it sitting next to the piano.

This one cost ten dollars.

(The top afghan in the chair came from a thrift store.)

Wanna guess where I got this cute little green stool?

At the roadside. Can you believe that somebody was getting rid of this?

It was already distressed, so I was willing to overlook the fact that it's not sturdy enough to sit on.

But it sure looks cute sitting along the wall in my kitchen.:)

(By the way, the crate and two drawers on the left came from an antique store,

the large flower from a yard sale, and the tin pot from a thrift store.)

I also have delightfully mismatched chairs around my kitchen table (three of the four came from yard sales), I use an old jury chair as a desk chair (bought at an estate sale), and have a really old school chair (from the thrift store) as decor in our guest bathroom. Who says you can't decorate with secondhand stuff?!?

But if you're wondering, not everything in my house is pre-owned:)

Thrifty Thursday #81

     My sweet hubby has been really good lately about offering to take me yard sale-ing

and I'm loving it!

     We went out last Friday morning, but didn't have much luck.

 

As we were driving through a neighborhood looking for sales, I spotted this chair at the roadside.

 

Far be it from me to let something like this with so much potential go to the dump. I hopped out of the car and tossed it into the trunk. My hubby said he wasn't for sure if the people were throwing it away. I explained that nobody puts worn out stuff at the curb unless they're getting rid of it. :)

Anyway, I'm super excited to revamp it!

 

 

We actually only found one yard sale in our area.

I got this small dish for a quarter. I held it in my hand so you could get an idea of the size.

 

Since we only got two things on Friday, my hubby took me out again on Saturday. Isn't he fantastic? :)

  Once again, we only found one sale worth stopping at.

 

We found this thing for fifty cents.

I don't know what it is, but I know I can turn it into something!

 

I spotted this heavy duty onion holder for a dollar. I thought my hubby could use it to grow herbs in his garden. He liked the idea.

 

We didn't even spend two dollars, but it was worth going out.

Please Stay Seated. . .

     This post has been a long time in the making. Right before summer started, I showed you an awesome roadside find. . . two black chairs. Right away, I knew just what I was going to do with them. It took me much longer than I thought -not the actual work on the chairs, just finding the time to work on them- but without further ado, here they are!

 

I used a hand sander along all the edges.

 

I don't know what kind of paint was originally used on these, but it didn't come off easily- especially on the seats!

Just a Peek

     Yesterday I showed you two chairs that I had gotten for free. In the post, I had mentioned to stop back by today to see them all cute and distressed.
     Well, all I can do is show you a peek of a leg. I, unfortunately got started sanding, but didn't get to finish. Life got in the way.
    My hubby always says that I plan too much in too little time. That is a lesson I refuse to learn. One of these days, I'll complete my list and that'll show him!:)

     But they're going to look nice, huh?

Thirfty Thursday #69

     I have to show you two fantastic curbside finds. . .

 

these awesome chairs!

They are nice and sturdy. I really don't know why somebody was throwing them away.

All I have to do is wash them really well and knock off a mud dauber nest (see it on the left side under the edge of the seat?).

Then I think I'll take the hand sander to them to distress them a bit. I can't wait to see how they turn out! (If you'd like to see, come back tomorrow:)

 

 

and I found this huge frame!

 It measures 31 1/2" x 28" and, it too, is in good shape.

I plan to paint it a bright color and distress it a bit. Then I'll put some chicken wire in it. I think it should look pretty cute.

     As much as I love secondhand shopping and good deals, you've gotta know that I am delighted when I find treasures like these for free!
