Thrifty Thursday #134

My thrifty finds are short and sweet today. . .

I got these three pretty saucers for a quarter apiece.
I just love serving dessert on cute mismatched plates.
My boys and hubby don't find it as cute as I do, but it makes me happy:)

This little teacup was only a quarter too.
I'd like to learn how to make my own candles in teacups.

I found these three cookbooks and immediately thought of a friend who collects vintage cookbooks.
Two of them are the Joy of Cooking and the third one is Ladies Home Journal Cookbook.
They are copyrighted 1954, 1963, and 1964.
My friend was thrilled to add these to her collection for $1 apiece.
Won't they look awesome sitting on a shelf in a kitchen?

This metal embroidery hoop was only a quarter.
I don't find these very often, so I pick them up when I do.
I think they are great to use when making mobiles.

My final find was the Deal of the Day!
My son recently got into archery. He bought a nice bow and bow case, but was still shopping around for a target- they're so expensive!
I spotted this one for $10. My son happened to be waiting for me in the car, so he was able to come in and get it. He was thrilled. He said that this size and brand of target brand new costs around $100.
I just love finding a good deal- especially at the thrift store!

That's all, Folks!

Happy treasure hunting!
Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

and shall make His footsteps our pathway.

Thrifty Thursday #125

It's been awhile since I've had unlimited time to peruse any secondhand stores.
This week was not one of those weeks.
I did get to run into one while my older son sat in the car with the radio and air running.
Here's what I quickly picked up. . .

I spotted this old stamp set from across the room.
I knew from the cover that it was going to be awesome on the inside. . .

and it is!
It has individual stamps that stick to the handle.
Nice. Only $2.

I love pretty and delicate teacups.
This beauty was only a quarter.

I've run out of maps to use for wrapping paper.
I picked these up for ten cents apiece.

This is a small tray, but so pretty.
It only cost a quarter.
I've picked up a few of these cheap silver platters- I have a special project in mind, but don't have quite enough yet. . .

That's it for this week.
We have company in town this weekend, so I probably won't make it out to any yard sales.
Best of luck to you if you do though!

Thanks so much for stopping by and God bless.

Christmas Centerpieces and Vintage Decor

Last week I got to help two of my good friends decorate for a Christmas banquet.
We had seven tables and two counter tops that needed to be made pretty.
We wanted to keep it low cost, but highly cute.
We planned for a shabby, old-fashioned Christmas look by bringing stuff from our houses and blending it together for these centerpieces.
Take a look and see what you think. . .

This was on the main counter top amid the fixings for fajitas.
We used lots of mason jars filled with cranberries, greens, and floating candles.

Hanging along the bottom edge of the counter was this tea-stained vintage lace garland and a garland of cranberries.

This was arranged on the dessert bar.
Don't you just love those large lanterns?
See the book page garland strewn throughout the arrangement?
The red candles were painted with Mod Podge and rolled in Epsom salts to get that "snowy" look.

The kids had made the paper bag angels, so we made them the focus of several of the arrangements.
You'll notice more cranberries here.
In each arrangement, we used Scrabble tiles spelling out words in tile holders.

This was on the table as you first entered.
There's three candles and a vintage book photo holder displaying two old postcards.
We used lots of burlap and old doilies and lace throughout.

For smaller arrangements, we paired up vintage books with teacups that we used as candle holders.
One of my friends thought up the idea of using teacups like that and I just love that look!

I adore the look of the wood rounds and the green moss.

We used Scrabble tiles like confetti and sprinkled them around all the arrangements.
 Sweet and simple, huh?

More vintage books

We incorporated an old film canister as a tray beneath this arrangement.

This is my old yard sale birdhouse that we used for a centerpiece.
How cute is it paired with old books and candles?

Most the centerpieces contained similar items, just arranged differently.

We used maroon and white tablecloths and beautiful burlap table runners.

This buffet is beautiful on its own, but we upped it's loveliness with a vintage book table runner, candles, and this awesome typewriter (which isn't mine, but I wish it was!).

Finally, this is the corner that was set up for family photos.
I love the vintage feel between the burlap, cranberries, lace, and old books.

When we finished decorating, I told my friends that they need to come to my house and decorate my living room like this!

P.S. Want to know how much of this stuff came from thrift stores and yard sales?
Well, I'll tell you: the film canisters, all the old books, the Christmas blocks in the first photo, the tall silver candle sticks, the vegetable graters (in the above photo), all the tea cups, one of the wooden bowls, the Scrabble tiles, the jar of keys, and the large green bird house!
Who says you can't decorate with stuff from secondhand stores?!? :)

Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #92

Today I've got both yard sale scores and thrift store treasures to share.

I stopped at a yard sale last weekend at the sweetest little old lady's house. I got something uberly manly and something delicately feminine.

The first item is this beautiful teacup and saucer set.
I'm used to thrift store prices, so when the lady told me she wanted $2, I thought it was too much and almost declined. Then I took another look at this set. It's so pretty and delicate, I just had to get it.

The only other thing I found that I wanted was this wheelbarrow.
I got it for $2 for my hubby.
It does need a new tire, but I figured it that cost too much, he could plant something in it.
He was pleased with his inexpensive surprise.

Then I made a quick trip to my favorite two thrift stores.
I got this letter Z for my collection. It was only fifty cents.
I cannot wait to have the whole alphabet.
I know just where I'm going to hang it in my living room!

I got two sets of this pretty beaded garland- one for fifty cents the other for $1.25.
I can use these in almost any holiday decorating.
I think I'll take them to church when I help decorate for the annual Christmas banquet.

Look at this- it was a hand mirror.
Soon it will be a picture frame.
It was only fifty cents. Won't it look so cute with a vintage photo in it?

You know me and old patterns- if they're old and cheap, I'm going to buy them.
Got this one for ten cents. It's from 1968.

I have a Christmas project in mind that requires old book covers. I've been on the lookout for books that have titles that will work- I got these three for a quarter each.

The last thing I picked up was this hardcover book. I love the clockwork on the cover. This will become the cover of an old scrapbook soon.

That's all folks! I wish you luck with your secondhand shopping endeavors!

Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #79

Last weekend there was an estate sale that I wanted to go to, but our weekend was so packed that it looked like I wasn't going to get to it. Luckily, I found a little time Sunday afternoon to go.
It started raining on the way there. By the time I got there, it was pouring and all the stuff that was left was laying out on the front lawn. Did I let that stop me?  Oh no, I didn't. I got out my trusty umbrella and carefully walked through puddles to see what I could find. With it being the last day of the sale, there wasn't much.

I found this small Pyrex bowl and I just love it. It even has a lid.
This type of dish always reminds me of my mother-in-law.

I also spotted this old scoop. It just appealed to me. I think it's pretty old- there are words imprinted on the metal part. I can't read them all, but I can make out that it's 1/4 cup. The scoop looks worn, but I thought it would be cute hanging on the wall. I got this and the Pyrex bowl for $2.

I'd say it was worth shopping in the rain.:)

Today I took a quick buzz through a thrift store. I got this dessert plate for $1. I love the turquoise flowers on it. Not for sure if I'll use it in my kitchen or if I'll use it for a project.

I got this 18" beaded necklace for $1. I think it's pretty.
I'm planning to add a fabric flower to it. Stay tuned:)

I found the teacup for only a quarter. Then I spotted the plate for fifty cents. They aren't a perfect match, but they're close. I'm going to use them to make a candle holder like this.

Good luck with your thrifty shopping! Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #68

I had some good finds on my thrifting run this week.

Aren't these little teacups cute? I couldn't pass them up at a quarter apiece. I really don't need them for anything, so I think I'll give them to my friend who's collecting them to make bird feeders.

Look at these pretty green teardrop crystals.
I didn't think fifty cents for four of them was too bad at all!
There's a hole at the end of them for stringing.

I found this awesome old pattern for a quarter.

I got this book for my hubby. At $2, it was a splurge for me, but he was really excited about it. He's into organic gardening and because it was printed in 1971, I thought it would have some good information in it.

I found this brand new, never been opened Bible Edition version of Scattergories.
I teach Sunday School and every so often we play a game. The kids have been asking for a new game, and now for $2, we have one!

Good luck to you and all your secondhand shopping this week. Thanks for stopping by to see the treasures I found! God bless.

Teacup and Saucer Candle Holder

I have a weakness for cute teacups- especially when I can find one with a matching saucer.
I never drink out of them as I am not fond of tea. They simply aren't big enough for my Diet Coke. Nevertheless, I have a small collection sitting in a cabinet.
I think if I had a daughter, we would have regular tea parties.
But I don't.
I have two rough and tumble boys who cannot be convinced to do any such thing:)

So, while browsing an awesome garage sale recently (I've been to this lady's garage sale before and she is the most awesome garage sale-er that I have ever seen! She has great stuff and actually sets it out nicely and sets up vignettes!), I found a beautiful teacup and saucer with little red flowers. I knew just what to do with them. . .

I turned them into a candle holder.
It was so easy!

If you'd like to make one, all you need is:
a teacup
a saucer
E-6000 glue
short pillar candle or small cloche

Apply E-6000 glue to the bottom rim of the teacup.

With the saucer upside down, place the teacup glue-side down in the center of the saucer bottom.

Let it dry for 24hours.
You may want to place a stack of books on top- just make sure when you don't bump the cup and mess up the alignment.

Ta-da!

Then you can either add a cloche

or a small candle.

This would make a great gift for a friend or would be cute for party decor.

If you like this project, take a look at these other projects using little China plates.

I used them as frames.
You can see this post here.

I made some into a wreath.
You can see the post here.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless.
