Thrifty Thursday #213

My hubby and I went to an estate sale recently.
Last week I showed you what we got the first day we went.
I insisted that we go back the final day to pick up a few more things
once the "last day" discount started.
I actually had a list of things that I wanted to get if they were still there.
It turned out that several of the items had already sold (an old toolbox and a typewriter)-
both were cool, but I didn't want them at the price that was marked.

Without further ado, here are my finds from day two of the estate sale. . .

How cool is this spool?!?
I love the graphics on it.
I'm going to have my hubby remove the 2x4 from the top.
Then I think we can add a piece of glass and turn it into an end table.

Don't you just love the graphics?
It was originally $25, but I got it 40% off, so I paid $15 for it.
My hubby loves that it still has the rope on it. He's hoping to put that to use.

I also picked up these baby booties.
There were a total of four pairs.

I've seen different projects using vintage booties on Pinterest and I can't wait to try some of them.

I got all four pairs for $9.

That's it. A pretty good haul for two days, I think.

Thrifty Thursday #117

Part of the fun of shopping at thrift stores and yard sales is that you never know what you'll find.

There are days where I don't find anything, but I always enjoy the thrill of the hunt:)

This week I found several beautiful plates. . .

 

This one is a tiny dessert plate. I just LOVE the color scheme.

It cost a dollar, and I'm holding onto it for something special.

 

This is a very old dessert plate. It was only a quarter because of the chip.

I bought it anyway because it has such a beautiful print.

This one and the next two are for a friend who's collecting plates

in hopes of displaying her collection on a wall.

 

This large dinner plate cost a dollar.

I love the blue print and the house theme.

I already have one like this in my collection of mismatched dinner plates.

 

This one is slightly larger than a dessert plate, but smaller than a dinner plate.

This guy cost a quarter.

I think my friend will be happy with my finds for her:)

 

I never pass up wooden spools- even though I have quite a few.

These guys were fifty cents each.

 

I got a bag of brand new picture hangers for $ .25- they even came with the tiny nails

to attach the hangers!

 

I got this old box of 1" styrofoam balls for a quarter.

I need a few more, then I'll turn these into a darling fabric ball garland.

 

I got all these books for a quarter each.

I just love quick reads that I can get rid of once I'm done.

If I take one with me to a doctor's appointment and I finish it, I can just leave it behind. I did that once after a pedicure and one of the staff ran after me to hand it to me. When I told her I was through with it and didn't need it anymore, she was tickled to get to keep it!

Projects Using Book Pages

After tearing covers off of books for this project, needless to say, I had quite a few books without covers. Here are some ways that I used the leftovers . . .

First off, I took four of the books, and tied them together with twine. Then I used some letter stamps and Staz On ink and stamped the word "Love" on the edges of the pages.

 

How simple is this?!?

To add a little holiday zing, I put a sprig of holly in the twine.

Next I glued pages to the chipboard letters J, O, Y.
Once I adhered the page to the letter, I sanded around the edges to get rid of the excess. This is how I kept the edges so smooth.

I got the letters at Hobby Lobby- half off! So they were only $.99 apiece!

Sweet and simple.

 

 

Once I remove the holiday berries, I can have them out all year.

I sewed this book page garland in under 15 minutes.

I followed the tutorial I found here.

Super easy. Super cute.

 

I even used a few strips to pep up this wooden spool garland.

Book pages, old spools- who wouldn't love this?:)

Thrifty Thursday #65

     For some reason, my last few weeks have felt extra hectic. I haven't been able to fit in the fun stuff. Does that ever happen to you? It's like I've just been chasing my tail! Ah, well, such is the life of a mom:)
     Fortunately, I did get to take about ten minutes and pop into my favorite resale shop. It was worth the time and the money I spent!

 

I found this beautiful old spool for $.75.

It's going to go on my mantle next to my other giant spool.

 

I got this bolt of pretty white lace for a quarter!

 

I fell in love with this silver tray.

It's about 12 inches across by 7.5 inches wide.

For fifty cents it is mine to do with as I wish! I'll find some cute project to use it in.

I've been wanting to get a silver tray that I can use for a magnet board. This guy unfortunately isn't magnetic, but that's ok. I would've bought him anyway.

I need to put a magnet in my purse so I can test what I find.

 

I always pick up embroidery hoops when I find them.

This one is about eight inches across and only cost a quarter.

 I have a few "hoop" projects on my to-do list.

 

I got these brand new bags of confetti for a quarter each.

Next month, I get to help decorate for a graduation party.

Guess what the school colors are? That's right: red and black!

I'd have paid more than a quarter for a bag of this at Party City!

 

I picked this up for a quarter.

Who among us can't use a little improvement? I know I can use some:)

 

This was my favorite find of the day.

They're old pendants. Not for sure how old, though.

The original price tags were still on them.

I can't wait to do something with them!

Mini Spool Necklace Tutorial

     Today I have a quick and easy project for you. . . shocker, I know (hee hee). If you have read this blog for any length of time, you've probably noticed that nearly everything I do is quick, easy, or quick and easy!

 

Today's project is a necklace with mini spools.

Are you thinking, "My that's cute- I'd sure like to make one for myself!"?

If you are, you're in luck. Here's a step-by-step.

 

You'll need:

three small wooden spools (can be found at a craft store)

18" necklace (I used a ball chain)

three different colors of embroidery floss

glue that dries invisible (Elmer's should work)

 

Take your first spool and put a tiny dot of glue on it.

 

Then place the end of your embroidery floss on the glue and start wrapping it around the spool.

 

Keep wrapping until the entire spool is covered.

 

Then cut off the excess floss. Place a tiny dot of glue at the end of the floss.

 

You can use the head of the glue bottle to firmly press the end of the floss into the glue.

Give it a little time to dry, then this is what you should end up with.

Now do it with the other two spools.

 

Place the spools on your necklace, and you're through!

How do you like that?

 

I'm thinking that if you'd rather use small scraps of scrapbook paper or fabric instead of the embroidery floss that would look cute, too.

Valentine Crafts and Teacher Gift Ideas

    Here are a few Valentine's crafts.  .  .

 

This is a set of old spools that are full of love. If you'd like to see how I made them, you can go here.

 

 

I made this Valentine's bunting out of old playing cards. It was a super easy project. If you have twine, playing cards, and a set of letter stickers, you can make this. You can go here to see how.

 

I made two strands of this heart garland- one out of old book pages and this one out of an old comic book. You can see the tutorial here.

 

These first three projects were made for Valentine's Day, but I liked them so much, I kept them up all year!

 

 

Here is an idea for a teacher gift. Send her favorite soda with a little chocolate. This project is super easy, but perfect for sending to school on Valentine's Day. After all, who doesn't like a little treat? You can go here to see more.

 

 

This is one of my favorite discoveries of all time- chocolate covered gummy bears. Heavens to Betsy- they are sooooooo good! Whip up a batch of these, then put them in a snack size Ziplock bag with a paper doily stapled over the top. What a delightful gift! You could give a bag of these to your co-workers, grandparents, or your child's teacher. You can see how to make these here.

Turn Mini Spools into a Bracelet

     I was looking through a magazine and saw a picture of a darling bracelet made from little wooden spools. I love unique pieces of jewelry, so I set this photo aside in my "someday" pile. Well, guess what? Someday has arrived! Take a look at the bracelet I made from little wooden spools. . .

If you'd like to make one, you need

16-18 half-inch wooden spools (I got mine in the wood section at Hobby Lobby)

tiny strips of paper to cover the spools

Mod Podge

stretch elastic for making bracelets

The first thing you'll do is cover the spools with the pattern paper. You could go with a monochromatic color scheme or just use all kinds of papers which is what I did.

Then you need to cut a length of elastic about 20-22 inches long. With the first spool, you need to string the spool onto the center of the spool. For each spool after that, you need to cross both ends of the elastic through opposite ends of the spool. It will make an X with the elastic.

Then pull both ends of the elastic tight which will draw the spool down next to the previous spool.

Like this.

You'll end up with a line of spools. When you reach the sixteenth spool, measure it around your wrist to see if it will fit. If needed, add more spools until it fits around your wrist.

When you have enough spools, you need to cross the elastic through the first spool which will turn your line of spools into a circle. Tie a knot.

Ta-da! You have a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry.

Next time I may stain the spools a darker shade before covering them with paper.

Using Old Spools as Photo Holders

     Hi Everybody! I have a cute and easy use for old wooden spools-

as a photo display.

I found this idea here with the wooden spools, but I thought why not take it one step further and cover the spools with pattern paper. . .

See how you just slip a photo into the slit and voila!

I have a large old jar full of spools on display on my fireplace hearth. (As my eleven year old likes to point out, I do love old stuff!)

All I did was create a slit in the side using a miter saw-

like this.

The spool holds a photo beautifully.

Then I covered this spool with a piece of map.

This one is covered with part of an old book page.

And this one is covered with sheet music.

Notice how I have it holding a gift card. What a great gift idea- once the gift card is removed, the spool becomes a photo holder!

I made a bunch of these last Christmas for work and church gifts. If you plan to do this, I suggest you plan to do the sawing over several nights as my hands got pretty tired after sawing several spools.

While I was making these, it dawned on me that with a piece of handwriting paper, the spool then becomes school-themed which means it would make a great teacher appreciation gift!
