Thrifty Thursday #105

Last Saturday, I was cruising up and down some streets that I don't usually frequent, trying to find a yard sale that was advertised in the paper. I never did find that sale; however, I happened across a church that was having a garage sale. I was happy to have found it because I got some good stuff!

I fell in love with this old bowl. It was sitting in a stack with the bowl in the photo below.

They both have that patina that comes with age.

They weren't priced, so I wasn't too sure what to expect.

 Can you believe the gal only charged me fifty cents per bowl? These were old enough to be in antique shops and they certainly would have cost a lot more there!

I love them so much- and yes, I will actually use them as serving bowls.

Since there are only males in my house, nobody else seems to enjoy my old dishes, but it makes me happy to use them:)

I got this picture for $3. Its 18" wide x 24"tall

and is from the Kelly Rae Roberts Collection by Demdaco.

These cost $59.99 brand new.

Quite a deal.

It actually matches my bedroom decor. I even had a space for it!

Sitting next to the old bowls were some old plates.

Isn't this one a beauty?

I bought two like this- one for myself and one for a friend.

I also got this one which matches one of the bowls.

I paid a dollar for all three plates.

I got this beautiful lacy table runner for $1.

I'm helping to decorate for an upcoming wedding shower and we're using lots of white lace, so I've been picking up pieces as I find them.

I got this doily and the next for fifty cents each.

These will also be used to decorate at the shower.

Well, I think you'll agree that I was lucky to have stumbled across this sale!

 I only spent $7 and look at my loot:)

Thrifty Thursday #103

With the cold weather, yard sales have been pretty slim around these parts.

It warmed up for a bit last week, so I was able to find two listed in the classifieds

that I ventured out to.

The first was posted as an estate sale. I pulled up and saw a few tables in the garage.

That was the smallest estate sale I'd ever seen. I asked the gentleman running it about it, and he said some lady with a shop came the day before and bought all the furniture. So I was a day late and a dollar short.

 

I did find this small bowl for a quarter. Pretty huh?

I've purchased pieces with this pattern before.

This one isn't for me though. The same friend who has me looking for mixing bowls also has me watching for pretty plates so she can have a display of varied plates on her living room wall.

I often find plates, but I really don't need any, so it will be nice to be able to pick some up for her.

 

I also got this dinner plate for her. It was a dollar, but so worth it.

It's in great shape and I love the rose design.

 

I never pass up a doily that's in good condition and under a dollar.

This one was fifty cents.

 

I fell in love with this jewelry set. The smaller hearts are earrings, but I plan to cut off the posts and glue bails to the back to make pendants.

I hope to use my silverware stamps on these.

I swung by the second sale on my way home.

I picked up this set of heart cookie cutters for fifty cents.

I think I'll do something crafty with them rather than make cookies. . . we'll see:)

Vinyl Record Bowls

     I am helping to plan a graduation party, and we've decided to go with a music theme as the graduate has been very involved with his school choir. I have been collecting vinyl records for awhile and now I have a use for them! I am going to be using them for all sorts of things.
     Like today, I decided to give this a whirl. . .

I made this one first,

 

then I whipped up this one.

 I followed the easy steps listed in this tutorial.

 

 

Now that I've tried this project and it not only worked, but was extremely quick and easy, I will make several of these to hold the toppings for our nacho/burrito bar!

 I just need to make a run to the thrift store to pick up a few more records. . .

Thrifty Thursday #62

     How do you spell Saturday morning fun for my family? A community garage sale, that's how!
     I'll be honest, though. My boys don't get excited about the sales. Nope. Actually, they get excited about a stop at the donut shop. The town hosting the community sale has a bakery that sells huge donuts. I mean they're huge- like the size of my kids' heads huge. That's why my boys like to come:)

     I found some good things besides fried goodies, though. . .

 

This beautiful glass bowl was only fifty cents!

I washed it up and used it the same day:)

 

One sale had a sign that said all clothes were only a quarter.

This shirt had no wear and my growing son needs church clothes.

I only had a five dollar bill with me, so I asked the lady if I could run to my car to get some coins. She told me to just take the shirt. So I got it for free!

 

We found one sale in an old outdoor building. I was expecting great things from it, but was disappointed.

While digging through a basket of old jewelry and I spotted this flower pin. I love the red rose.

I think somehow I'll incorporate it into a bracelet.

 

I love old silverware and serving utensils. I got these for a quarter apiece.

I'll be looking at Pinterest for uses for ladles- other than serving food.

 

I never pass up these index card dividers.

They come in handy for scrapbooking.

 

Look at these two old books I found.

 

Oh, how I love old books. These were fifty cents each.

 

 

This life vest was only $1. It's the second brand new life vest I have gotten at a yard sale.

My father-in-law recently gave us a fishing boat, so these two vests will come in handy!

 

We went to several sales in the community. This is about half my loot; come back next Thursday and see what else I found!

Thrifty Thursday #61

     Many Saturday mornings I jump in my car with a Diet Coke all fired up about going to yard sales. Then I'll drive all around town and only find two- and sometimes they aren't even a good two. It feels like a wasted morning. After a morning like that, I always say that I'm going to check the newspaper before I go the next time. Then sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
     This past weekend I found a couple, and it was worth all the driving around!

 

I got this platter and cloche for $1.50.

I've seen all kinds of projects using these throughout Blogosphere.

I love old flash cards. I got this set for a dollar.

I often find flash cards, but I don't get them if they're not old.

 

This is a small bowl- only 4 1/2 inches across the mouth- but it was love at first sight. I don't even care about the chip on the lip (right side of photo). It's so old that it has spider cracks in the glaze .

I was shocked when the lady told me that it was only a quarter!

 

I love old books. This one is an old child's hymnal. The lady running the sale told me that I could have it for free since it was "God's Word." She said she can't charge for that.

 

I snatched up this beauty, too. I got it for free as well.

I've never had anybody let me have religious books for free before.

 

The illustrations are fantastic!

No, I will not be cutting up these two books:)

 

 

Found this brand new set of labels for a dime- I'm going to take them to the next scrapbooking group with my church friends so they can have something cute to journal on.

I have a huge collection of journaling cards, but not everybody else does. This way they can have a little variety in their books, too.

A Bowl Full of Melody

     Have you ever looked at one of your old bowls and thought, "What could I do to make this fella cuter?" Me neither. But I when I spotted this old stainless steel bowl at a thrift store, I did think something along those lines.

 

I decided to dress up its interior with some old sheet music.

 

Gives it a little something, I think.

 

If you'd like to make one, all you need is:

an old bowl- metal or wooden

a few pages of sheet music

Mod Podge

foam brush

paper towel

 

 

First tear the sheet music into small scraps- about one inch squares (it's okay if they're a little bigger or smaller- we don't want them to be exactly the same, that's why we're tearing instead of using a paper trimmer)

 

Then apply Mod Podge to the back of each piece and lay it inside the bowl. Use a paper towel to press down on top of the scrap to make sure it completely sticks.

 

Continue doing this until the interior is covered.

 

Once it's finished, run a piece of fine grit sandpaper along the top edge of the bowl to even out the edges of the scraps.

 

NOTE: I didn't apply a coat of Mod Podge on top because sometimes when you put something on top of it for too long, it gets tacky and will stick to the item leaving a worn space. I do plan to coat this with some sort of protectant, though.

 

 

 

I'm not sure what I'll use it for yet. . .

 

perhaps in my work space to store some supplies.

Thrifty Thursday #56

     Lately, I've been fitting a thrift store run into my weekly grocery shopping trip. Not because the thrift stores are near where I grocery shop, because they really aren't. Just because when I have a little time out and about, I take advantage of it and try to do a little something fun.
     I got a few goodies on this week's run. . .

 

I found this darling Pyrex mixing bowl that was marked $2. I thought that was a little high as it was a small bowl, so I asked the gentleman working the cash register if I could give him $1 for it. He thought long and hard, then agreed. Score! 

I have a friend who asked me to be on the lookout for glass mixing bowls for her. I love to have a mission when I'm secondhand shopping, so I gladly agreed to keep an eye out for these.

 

This cute little cup and saucer was only fifty cents. I have another friend who has me watching for teacups for her. It's so nice to be able to pick up cute things that I don't have to find a place for when I get home!

 

I don't usually buy clothes secondhand, but I spotted this summer dress that looks brand new for only $3 and couldn't pass it up. I love the style, and I love the color. Even if I just wear it around the house, it was indeed a bargain.

 

I got this set of four records for $1. When I see a good deal on records, I am always tempted to buy them. If you're wondering why, take a look here and here and you'll see some projects in which I've used vinyl records.
