French Book Page Candles

I've had this project on my to-do list for awhile-

French book page candles.

I got a French textbook at a thrift store and thought the pages would look
so lovely wrapped around candles.

Once I put it on, it was a little lackluster.

So I added wide lace with pink edging

and wrapped some twine around them.

I think the lace and twine were just what they needed!

The French text is still able to be seen through the lace.

I used beige candles because the book pages were old enough that they weren't white anymore.

I got my candles at a dollar store.

Then I trimmed the pages to fit. It took two separate pieces to cover the entire candle.

Then I held the lace on by wrapping it with twine.

Kind of elegant and girly, huh?

Vintage Book Page Candles

Whenever I'm out secondhand shopping, I'm always drawn to old books.

Needless to say, I have quite a few of them.

I used a few pages from two different vintage textbooks for today's project.

I wrapped candles with them.

All I did was cut the pages to the same height as the candles.

Then I used Mod Podge to attach them.

Here are the backsides of the above candles.
I covered the entire outside of each candle with images.

Here are the backsides of the first set.

Yes, you can still light them. 

I did it and the candle just burns down behind the paper.

I think these would make darling party decor or sweet gifts for a teacher.

Painted Candlestick Holder

This is a project that's been a longtime coming.
I have wanted to paint this candlestick holder since I bought it over a year ago. It's just been sitting on my kitchen counter looking longingly at me (or maybe I've been looking longingly at it).

 

So I finally sat down and painted it.

Pretty, huh? How about that color?

 

 

This is how it started out. It only cost me a dollar at a yard sale.
 

I started by giving it two coats of metal primer.

Then I painted it in eggshell (the tip is what it looked like before the glaze).
I gave it two coats,

 

 then I covered it with a glaze which I made by watering down brown paint.

 

 

I painted a small area, then wiped off the extra glaze with a paper towel.

 

I think it brings out the detail.

 

I'm super happy with how it turned out.

Christmas Centerpieces and Vintage Decor

Last week I got to help two of my good friends decorate for a Christmas banquet. 

We had seven tables and two counter tops that needed to be made pretty.

We wanted to keep it low cost, but highly cute.

We planned for a shabby, old-fashioned Christmas look by bringing stuff from our houses and blending it together for these centerpieces.

Take a look and see what you think. . .

 

This was on the main counter top amid the fixings for fajitas.

We used lots of mason jars filled with cranberries, greens, and floating candles.

 

Hanging along the bottom edge of the counter was this tea-stained vintage lace garland and a garland of cranberries.

 

This was arranged on the dessert bar.

Don't you just love those large lanterns?

See the book page garland strewn throughout the arrangement?

The red candles were painted with Mod Podge and rolled in Epsom salts to get that "snowy" look.

 

The kids had made the paper bag angels, so we made them the focus of several of the arrangements.

You'll notice more cranberries here.

In each arrangement, we used Scrabble tiles spelling out words in tile holders.

 

 

This was on the table as you first entered.

There's three candles and a vintage book photo holder displaying two old postcards.

We used lots of burlap and old doilies and lace throughout.

 

For smaller arrangements, we paired up vintage books with teacups that we used as candle holders.

One of my friends thought up the idea of using teacups like that and I just love that look!

 

I adore the look of the wood rounds and the green moss.

 

We used Scrabble tiles like confetti and sprinkled them around all the arrangements.

 Sweet and simple, huh?

 

More vintage books

 

We incorporated an old film canister as a tray beneath this arrangement.

 

This is my old yard sale birdhouse that we used for a centerpiece.

How cute is it paired with old books and candles?

 

Most the centerpieces contained similar items, just arranged differently.

 

We used maroon and white tablecloths and beautiful burlap table runners.

 

This buffet is beautiful on its own, but we upped it's loveliness with a vintage book table runner, candles, and this awesome typewriter (which isn't mine, but I wish it was!).

 

Finally, this is the corner that was set up for family photos.

I love the vintage feel between the burlap, cranberries, lace, and old books.

 

When we finished decorating, I told my friends that they need to come to my house and decorate my living room like this!

 

P.S. Want to know how much of this stuff came from thrift stores and yard sales?

Well, I'll tell you: the film canisters, all the old books, the Christmas blocks in the first photo, the tall silver candle sticks, the vegetable graters (in the above photo), all the tea cups, one of the wooden bowls, the Scrabble tiles, the jar of keys, and the large green bird house!

Who says you can't decorate with stuff from secondhand stores?!? :)

Veteran's Day Patriotic Candle DIY

Veteran's Day is up and coming, and I've been feeling a little patriotic, so I thought it would be fun to do a red, white, and blue project.

Hence these patriotic candles.

I thought they'd be nice to set out when we eat dinner on Monday night.

My hubby and I will tell our kids about all our family members who have served our country.

If you'd like to make some, here's what you'll need:

one piece of 12"x 12" patriotic scrapbook paper

three short pillar candles (mine are about 2 3/4" tall)

Mod Podge

foam brush

paper trimmer

ruler

First measure the height of the candle. Then trim a strip of paper to that height.

Next, wrap the paper around the candle and make a mark where you want to cut it.

Allow a little bit of room for it to overlap.

After cutting it to the correct length, use the foam brush to paint the back of the paper with Mod Podge. Moving quickly before the glue dries, adhere the paper to the candle.

I started at one end, then carefully pressed the paper to the candle as I spun it around.

Roll it around in your hands a few times to make sure the paper adheres.

Repeat with the rest of your candles.

Easy-peasy!
