Vinyl Record Projects

In all my secondhand shopping, I've noticed that one thing I can almost always find is
 vinyl records.

You may be thinking, "Big deal. Nobody uses those anymore."

Well, let me show you what can be done with them. . .

I've turned some into a wreath. 

I've made some into bowls.

I've even cut them down and turned them into notebooks.

One of my favorite projects using vinyl records is this chandelier.
I made it using some ribbon, an old wheel and eight small records.

The easiest project that I've made with them is this plate stand.

Wreath Review

After two days of temperatures that reached 80 degrees,

we had a cold front come through dropping the temperature to 47 today.

Yipes!

I can't complain though. . . I know many people are getting snow with their cold weather.

As I'm staying in and trying to stay warm, I thought we'd take a look back at some wreaths.

This is my personalized spring wreath.

It's just about time for me to get it back out.

I just love the bright colors- I think it looks so happy!

Would you believe that I spent less than $10 making it?

This wreath is made from a vintage rug beater that I got at a thrift store.

The wire rings worked great for holding photos.

The best thing about this jute wreath is that the fabric rosettes are on clips and are removable,

 so I can change out the different color rosettes with the seasons!

This vinyl record wreath is one of my favorites!

I think it's so unique and retro.

This final wreath is made from an embroidery hoop and holds photos and memorabilia.

It's super easy to make, lightweight, and so cute.

I think this one would make a great teacher gift or grandparent gift.

Thrifty Thursday #95

 I went to another estate sale this past week. I sure do love wandering through houses and garages during estate sales and looking at everything, but it's also a bit sad knowing that

I'm walking through some one's life.

 

As I walked up to this sale, I saw two tall tables with round tops that were awesome. They looked very heavy and I have absolutely no place to put them, so I just walked on by. Oftentimes I talk myself into things that I shouldn't, so I didn't let myself get too close to them.

 

I did however let myself get close to these!

 I love finding old ledger books. And these were only a quarter apiece!

I get so excited when I spot one at a sale. I wonder how silly I must look sometimes- although in the heat of the moment, I never stop to think about my reaction.

 

I picked up these two trophies for a quarter apiece.

I don't know what the gal at the sale thought I was getting them for because she said she sure was glad to see them go to a good home.

I don't plan to sit them out and try to give the impression that I'm good at bowling or dominoes. I've actually seen cute projects made with these that I've been wanting to try.

 

I got a bunch of records for a dime each.

 

I also got this old metal caddy for a dollar.

I haven't yet decided what to do with it.

 

I got this old Progressive Farmer magazine for a dime. It's from 1965. I love finding old periodicals.

 

I also brought home a box fan for $2. My hubby has a rabbit and she lives in a cage in our backyard. It gets pretty hot during Texas summers, so I was thinking he could use it to keep air moving through her cage.

Thrifty Thursday #73

     My, oh my, do I have a big haul to show you this week! It was a good day to stop into the thrift store!

 

I found this contraption and fell in love- it's a necklace hanger mounted to a china plate.

I've been wanting to make one of these, but I don't know how to drill through glass. This fella was only fifty cents!

 

I love quirky notepads.

They make cute pages for mini albums or great cards for journaling on scrapbook pages. Even though this pad was half gone, what was left was in good shape. It was worth the quarter:)

 

This plant hanger was only a quarter, too. I got it for my brother who loves plants. He has enough that he could open a nursery! He just keeps buying them and buying them. It takes him two hours to water them all. I told him that sounds more like work than a hobby!

 I thought this one for choir gowns was pretty unique.  

 

I've told you before that I never pass up embroidery hoops - especially at a quarter apiece. You just never know when one will come in handy, so I try to keep some on hand.

There's a darling project I've been wanting to make with them. Hopefully I'll be able to get to it within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned:)

 

I found this large beautiful China platter for a dollar.

I got it for my friend who's wanting some cute platters.

 

This set of metal plates was only fifty cents. I'm not for sure what I'm going to do with them, but I couldn't pass them up. I think they might make cute key rings.

 

There was a box of free stuff out in front of the thrift store. I got this double album set.

 

That's quite a load for a stop at one thrift store- and it didn't even cost me four dollars! I hope you have such bountiful luck with your secondhand shopping this week.

Music Themed Party Decor

     Last weekend was the graduation banquet that I got to help to decorate. I've mentioned it several times now, so I'm just going to show you some pictures of how it all turned out.
     The graduate was in choir and loved it, so we went with a music theme. We used lots of vinyl records and sheet music (all purchased at thrift stores).

 

We decorated this display rack and put a table in front of it with a record and a silver paint pen. We thought it would be fun to have all the attendees sign well wishes for the graduate on it.

I bought a 12"x12" frame at Michael's and covered the inside of the back piece with sheet music. That way, after everybody signed the record, we could put it in the frame and you wouldn't see the back of the frame peeking out from around the record.

 

Here's a close up of the display. . . I put the "N" covered with his pictures in the center. (You can go here to see how I made it.)

I had a lot of photos, so I attached them to the chicken wire with clothespins.

I made a sheet music banner to hang across the top (go here to see how to do that).

I thought I could add a little of his school color by making a chain out of tickets. I alternated red and white tickets stapling them in circles to one another.

 

We used simple dollar store tablecloths in black and red.

For the table centerpieces, we placed a record plate stand (you can go here to see how to make one) with a hurricane candle holder and pillar candle on top of each raised record. Then we put two regular records on either side of that. To finish it off, we sprinkled sheet music curls.

 

 

To make the sheet music curls, all I did was cut sheet music into strips and wrapped them around a pencil to make them curl.

 

I made a record chandelier from an old wheel, some 45s, and some black ribbon.

I had seen one of these on Pinterest and fell in love. Mine isn't as elaborate as the one I saw, but I think it turned out pretty cute.

 

We used the last of the red and black decor to pep up the food area.

I made another sheet music banner, but added words to this one.

 

For the dinner, we had a nacho/burrito bar. I had made record bowls for the nacho toppings, but I forgot to take a picture of those. You can go here to see what I'm talking about.

     This was a very affordable decorating theme- and quite easy to do. It would work for an anniversary party or a birthday party.

Thrifty Thursday #66

     I was running an errand last Saturday and got to swing by one yard sale. It was a tiny one and wasn't impressive, but I did bring home one item with me. . .

 

this pewter candlestick holder.

It cost me a dollar.

It's about four inches tall and five inches wide.

I love the detail on it.

 I'm anxious to paint it a pretty color.

 

Today I stopped into my favorite two thrift stores with a list in my hand.

I was able to pick up some vinyl records. They were fifty cents apiece.

I mentioned earlier this week that I'm going to be using a bunch of records to decorate for a music themed graduation party. I'm going to use them to make some of these.

 

I picked up these tiny candle holders which were also on my list.

 I'm going to use these to turn some of the above records into plate stands like I did here.

 

That's it. I didn't find anything else.

I'm going to have to take my list with me when I go to some yard sales this weekend!

Vinyl Record Bowls

     I am helping to plan a graduation party, and we've decided to go with a music theme as the graduate has been very involved with his school choir. I have been collecting vinyl records for awhile and now I have a use for them! I am going to be using them for all sorts of things.
     Like today, I decided to give this a whirl. . .

I made this one first,

 

then I whipped up this one.

 I followed the easy steps listed in this tutorial.

 

 

Now that I've tried this project and it not only worked, but was extremely quick and easy, I will make several of these to hold the toppings for our nacho/burrito bar!

 I just need to make a run to the thrift store to pick up a few more records. . .

Thrifty Thursday #58

     This past weekend my hubby and I went to an estate sale with some friends. They had been wanting to go to one and we just so happened to know where one was.

     It was the last hour of the last day of the sale. Prime time for deal making!

 

I found these two mini teacups- one with a saucer.

Each piece was marked fifty cents, but the lady let me have them all for a dollar.

These will get washed up and given to my friend who has me looking for teacups for a project she plans to do.

 

I loved the look of this old worn out cigar box. I think I paid $1 for it.

I plan to store my washi tape collection in it.

 

Love these spoons with the flower cut outs! They're perfect for serving spoons.

I got the whole set for $2.

 

I cannot pass up embroidery hoops. I like to keep them on hand for projects.

Got all these for one dollar!

 

If you stopped by last week, you saw that I came by an old record player. I'll probably give these records a spin before turning them into party decor.

I paid four dollars for all of these.

 

     As usual, my hubby and I had a great time browsing the estate sale. I think our friends did, too. I explained to them that sometimes you find awesome stuff and sometimes you strike out. You just never know til you go!

Thrifty Thursday #56

     Lately, I've been fitting a thrift store run into my weekly grocery shopping trip. Not because the thrift stores are near where I grocery shop, because they really aren't. Just because when I have a little time out and about, I take advantage of it and try to do a little something fun.
     I got a few goodies on this week's run. . .

 

I found this darling Pyrex mixing bowl that was marked $2. I thought that was a little high as it was a small bowl, so I asked the gentleman working the cash register if I could give him $1 for it. He thought long and hard, then agreed. Score! 

I have a friend who asked me to be on the lookout for glass mixing bowls for her. I love to have a mission when I'm secondhand shopping, so I gladly agreed to keep an eye out for these.

 

This cute little cup and saucer was only fifty cents. I have another friend who has me watching for teacups for her. It's so nice to be able to pick up cute things that I don't have to find a place for when I get home!

 

I don't usually buy clothes secondhand, but I spotted this summer dress that looks brand new for only $3 and couldn't pass it up. I love the style, and I love the color. Even if I just wear it around the house, it was indeed a bargain.

 

I got this set of four records for $1. When I see a good deal on records, I am always tempted to buy them. If you're wondering why, take a look here and here and you'll see some projects in which I've used vinyl records.
