Thrifty Thursday #185

Last weekend my hubby and I were planning to get up early Saturday morning
and head 20 minutes down the road to a nearby town that was having a city-wide yard sale.
We intended to spend the morning shopping.
But Friday night, our dog broke off a toenail.
I don't know how she did it- she's a very silly and active Labrador Retriever.
It was gross and we didn't want it to get infected.
So we took her to the vet early Saturday morning.
After she got a clean bill of health, we felt better about leaving her and proceeding with our plans.

Take a look at what we found. . .

You know I looooovvvveee old globes.
I saw this beauty sitting on the back of a car along with a few other items.
I asked the young man how much he wanted for it and he said twenty dollars.
When I didn't respond to that, he asked what I wanted to pay.
I told him five dollars.
He agreed.
It's just so pretty and old- I love it!

I also love typewriters.
I know this one isn't vintage, but it still works.
I was intrigued by the color.
The gentleman was asking $8. I offered $6 and he took it.
I'm going to use this thing for real- for journaling in my scrapbooks and maybe for typing
on gift tags. Who knows what else?!?

This beauty was only a quarter.
I love how old it looks.
It's going to hang on a wall, so the crack only adds to the charm.

You're probably looking at these old pans wondering why I would buy them.
Well, I got them because they're so small. I've never seen cookie sheets this size (9 1/2"x 7").
I think I may try to turn them into recipe holders. . .

I got a few more things. . . come back next week to see the rest.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #174

I announced last week that I was actually off of work on Friday and was
SUPER EXCITED to go yard sale-ing.
Well, I was off because of the holiday and I didn't even stop to think that there may not be any yard sales due to that same holiday.

That's right.
There were only three advertised in the paper.
Three.
 In July.
That's practically unheard of in the summer.
Except for holiday weekends.
Silly me.

My son actually got up early to head out with me.
We were able to find four or five sales.
I only bought one thing.

This lovely globe.
Even without a stand, I couldn't leave it behind.
It was only $2.
When my son saw me carrying it back to the car, he shook his head at me.
When I opened the door, he said, "What is that? Globe #10?"
While I have several, I certainly don't have ten of them:)

Anyway, I enjoyed the special time with my 13-year- old.
I spent $2 at a yard sale,
$5 at the donut shop,
and $44 at a fireworks stand.
Time spent with my son= priceless.

Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #148

Welcome to the first Thrifty Thursday of 2015!
It's been awhile since I've had this feature with the holidays falling on Thursdays.
With the busy-ness of the season, I wasn't able to make my weekly thrift store run; however;
I did make one stop into the thrift stores before Christmas and here's what I found. . .

I got this brand new, still in the box globe for $5.
I have a small collection of older globes.
This fella is too new to sit with those, so I'm planning to use this one for a project.
I'd really like to make one of those globes with the quotes written on them. . .

I got this large 15" tall glass cloche for $1.50.
What. A. Bargain!

Even though this magazine is a couple of years old, I still picked it up for $.75.
There's an article in it about making jewelry from old measuring tape.
That's right up my alley:)

My final purchase was this small, never been used Thirty One carry-all.
Guess how much I paid for it?
A quarter.
These cost $12 brand new.
It's going to sit in my car and help to keep my console organized.

Four great finds for only $7.50.
That's right, folks.
Thrift stores rock.
Enough said.

Thanks so much for stopping by and God bless.

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

Thrifty Thursday #147

This is the last Thrifty Thursday for 2014,
so I thought I'd share my five favorite finds this year. . .

I think it's so beautiful!
I'm hoping my hubby and I can get it up and running.
I have another vintage fan that actually works, and boy, does it have some power!
If we can't get this one to work, I'm thinking it would make a cute lamp. . .

It was love at first sight with this bowl.
How great are the green flower edges?!?

I pick up scales whenever I find them- especially when they're big and beautiful like this one.
They look pretty cute sitting on a shelf amongst books and photo frames.

I got it for $37.50 because it was the second day of the sale and everything was half off.
It's beautiful, strong, and sturdy, and my hubby had been wanting one.
Score!

I love all things relating to globes and maps. I especially love the tan color on this one.

See what kind of good stuff you can find secondhand?
Gosh, I just love thrift stores and yard sales,
and I especially love estate sales!

Stop back by the first Thursday of the new year to see
what kind of treasures I've dug up over the holidays.

Thanks so much for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #145

I've mentioned before that there are two thrift stores that I try to visit every week.
There is a third store in the same area, but I rarely go to it.
It's recently been built, so it's nice and clean, but I feel that their prices are a little high-
to pay for the new building, I suppose.

Anyway I don't know why I don't stop there more often
because the last few times that I have, I've found good stuff.

like this globe.
Isn't it beautiful?
It's slightly smaller than the average globe and is written in a foreign language.
It was made in Italy (per the manufacturer's tag on the bottom).
I paid $6 for it- which is not a bad price for a globe in this good of condition.

Then I made a quick run into my two usual haunts and only found one thing-
this reasonably priced brand new package of luminaries.
Our church has a lot of functions and I thought these could be used
as centerpieces for something or other.
They were $1 for 12.

That's it.
Not too hard on my pocketbook.
And that globe sure made me smile.

Thanks so much for stopping by and God bless.

but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.

Thrifty Thursday #130

My hubby and I don't have the same ideas of ways to spend free time,
but one thing we like to do together is go to yard sales.
As long as his work schedule cooperates, he enjoys coming with me.
And I always love having him come.
Here's what we found on our last jaunt together. . .

You know how I love globes.
I spent $4 on this guy.
I like the coloring on this one.

This vintage tray was only a quarter.
I've seen people do cute things with them on Pinterest, so I have some ideas on what to do with it.
It's about 8 1/2"x 14".

I haven't picked up any old books in awhile.
This one is a Bookkeeping and Accounting Course Book.
It was fifty cents.
It will be turned into a Junk Journal- stay tuned:)

I'm not for sure what this old thing was, but it will become a photo holder.
It cost $1.

Last, but not least, I found this pastry cutter for fifty cents. It, too, will soon hold photos.

I try to only pick up items that I know I can use- and I have ideas of what to do with all of these items, so I'd say it was a morning well spent- and the company was the best part:)

Good luck with your secondhand shopping this week.
Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #100

I recently had a day at the thrift store that girls like me only dream of:)
I found all kinds of good stuff- and luckily, I had some extra spending money in my purse.

I got this beauty for three dollars.
I'm working on getting a small collection of these guys.

I got these beautiful lacy curtains for five dollars a pair.
They don't appear to have had any wear.
There were actually five sets in all.
My mom had been wanting lacy curtains as she recently re-did her kitchen.
I ended up buying all five sets. I kept one pair for my house, and my mom was tickled pink with the deal she got on curtains.
You can't even leave Walmart with ten panels for $25!

This saucer is simply beautiful. I love when I find a dish done in a black and white scene with touches of color. I splurged and spent $1.50 on it.

It's actually English Staffordshire.
(I don't really know anything about this, but I thought it justified the price:)

The darling print drew me to this bag. It's brand new - has absolutely no use. It was marked $8 which is high for me to spend on one item, but I couldn't resist.
It's actually a Thirty One bag. I looked it up when I got home and this style costs $50.
I sure scored with this.
I'm sure you noticed that it's embroidered with the name Joy. I'm thinking that that's not just a name, but a feeling. I'll be calling it my Joy bag:)

I spotted four pairs of camo pants from across the room- when I finally got over to take a look at them, I was pleased to see that they were brand new.
They're 5.11 Tactical Series which sell at Academy.
The fellas in my house love anything camo. The waist size is a tad bigger than what they wear. I picked them up anyway, and they'll wear them with a belt. I even gave one pair to my brother.
Four brand new pairs of pants for $20!

I spent way more than I usually do while thrifting, but I got such awesome deals! This was only half the loot I found. Come back next Thursday to see the rest of my goodies.

Happy treasure hunting to you all.
Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Thrifty Thursday #94

I made it to the estate sale I was looking forward to going to last weekend.
Usually in estate sales, you get to walk through the house- at least the living room and kitchen. But this one had stuff out on the driveway. It wasn't organized and few prices were marked. It was advertised for Saturday only, but from the looks of what was displayed, I'm thinking she must have started on Friday. There wasn't much to see, but it was worth going to because. . .

I was thrilled to get this globe for a dollar.

I also found this pastry blender for a quarter.

There was a box of utensils marked ten cents each.
I've been wanting to try to make some silverware jewelry.
I especially love the detail on the tiny fork. I think it will clean up nicely and make a beautiful ring.

I got these four spoons as well.
Now I have enough to practice on in case it's not as easy as I'm hoping:)

Good luck to you with your secondhand shopping this week.
Thanks for stopping by and God bless.

Globe Bowls

My son had gotten this light up globe at a yard sale last summer.  But he broke the stand, so I claimed it. I pried it into 2 halves, added a little trim, glued the halves on stands, and now I have 2 darling globe bowls that I can use to organize my supplies.

Here's what I used to make this project. The stands are 2 different candlesticks that I've picked up on my thrifting adventures.

I attached some trim around the edge with a glue gun.

Each globe half had a hole in it. I cut a circle from chipboard and glued it in.

This way whatever I add to it won't fall through to the stand.

Then I used some E600 glue to attach the candlestick to the bottom of the  globe half. I let them dry for about a day.

These are going to look too cute on my scrapbooking desk. There is just something about globes that makes me happy:)
