Layout of the Week #37- Using a Q&A Quiz for Journaling

     This theme for this week's Layout of the Week is using a Q & A quiz for journaling. This layout only took me about 15 minutes to do- I hope you can whip it up as quickly! The main reason I was able to finish it so quickly was because I didn't have to write the journaling; instead, I printed up a quiz and had my sister fill it out.

 

Here's the layout we'll be creating.

 

I got the quiz from this book, which is an oldie but a goodie. I have used this book so many times over the years for both layouts and mini albums. I just type up one of these quizzes and give it to a family member to fill out. Then all I have to do is scrapbook it!

 

Here is the quiz I used for today's layout:

Four jobs I have had in my life

Four movies I could watch over and over

Four places I have lived

Four TV shows I love to watch

Four places I have been on vacation

Four of my favorite foods

Four people who have made a difference in my life

Four things I'd like to learn to do

 

To make this very simple layout, you'll need:

one piece of 12"x12" cardstock

one piece of 12"x12" pattern paper

one piece of pattern paper measuring 5"x8 1/4"

one piece of pattern paper measuring 1 1/2"x 6 1/4"

the above quiz printed onto a piece of cardstock measuring 6" x 9 1/4"

one vertical 4"x6" photo

letter stickers for the title

a few embellishments

adhesive

paper trimmer

 

To start, trim 1/2" off the right and bottom sides of the 12" x 12" piece of pattern paper and center it on the cardstock. Ink the edges if you'd like.

 

Place the journaling quiz about 1/2" from the right edge of the cardstock centered between the top and bottom.

 

Adhere the pattern paper measuring 5" x 8 1/4" about 1/2" from the left edge of the cardstock. it should be almost even with the top of the journaling paper.

 

Now take the pattern paper measuring 1 1/2"x 6 1/4" and adhere it behind the left side of the photo (mine is orange- see it?). Then adhere the photo about 1 1/4" from the bottom edge of the cardstock.

 

Now place your title along the bottom edge of the pattern paper. Part of mine overlaps the photo as well.

 

Finally, add an embellishment to the top right corner of the journaling paper. I used a ticket and a flower with a brad as the center.

And you're done! See what I mean about simple?

It's so nice to have the journaling already done by somebody else. Plus it's a fun to share somebody's personality and it showcases their handwriting!

Recipe of the Week #47-Chicken Noodle Soup

Chicken Noodle Soup
4 cups chicken broth
generous dash ground black pepper
1 medium carrot, sliced
1 stalk celery, sliced
1/2 cup uncooked extra wide egg noodles
1 cup shredded cooked chicken or turkey

Heat the broth, black pepper, carrot, and celery in a 2-qt saucepan over medium-high heat to a boil. Stir in the noodles and the chicken. Reduce heat to medium. Cook for 10 minutes or until noodles are tender.

Note: When I make this, I usually put in extra chicken and noodles.

My family loves this soup- especially my 11-year-old. He asks for it nearly every week.:)

Hand Tool Turned Jewely Organizer

     I'd like to introduce you to my newest re-do of a thrifted purchase . . .drum roll, please. . .

this handy necklace holder.

     A few Thrifty Thursdays ago, I picked up this cultivator for a dime (see the post here).

I knew from the get-go that I wouldn't be digging in the dirt with it. I had other plans for this little fella.

     I painted the handle white and sanded it. Then my hubby placed the end in between two pieces of wood, held them tight in a vise, and bent them all at once- that way they were equally bent. (Isn't he so sweet to help me?)

     How cute is this to hold some necklaces? I only placed a few on there, but you can see that many more would fit.

     Not only is it handy, but it's cute, too. Next time you spot a hand tool, look at it in a different light. You may be able to use it for something other than the obvious!

Remembering a Loved One at Christmas

      I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for awhile and I finally sat down to do it.

It's a jar to memorialize my mother-in-law. She passed a way a year ago last October after a short battle with kidney cancer.

I plan to place this on our fireplace hearth so we can include her memory in our Christmas celebration.

 

 

It's actually one vase placed inside a larger vase. I used artificial holly berries to hold up the battery powered candlestick in the center vase. Then in the larger vase, I placed red beads at the bottom and filled the rest of it with sticks and green leaves (from the holly berries).

Thrifty Thursday #45

     I've only got a few thrifty purchases to share today. . . haven't had a chance to shop much this week.

 

I fell in love with this cup and saucer set for fifty cents each piece.

 

These saucers just called out to me. I love the brown flower print. Can you believe they were only a dime each?

I've already washed them and placed them up on a shelf- I have to come up with the perfect project for them.

 

I actually got this awesome bench sometime ago at a yard sale, but I haven't shown it here yet. I had been wanting a bench for my front entry and was waiting for my hubby and boys to make one. Well, after several months of waiting, I came across this at a yard sale for-- brace yourselves-- five dollars!!

The lady selling it was in her late sixties and she made it herself out of old barn wood. That made me like it all the more!

I would like to paint it robin's egg blue, but my hubby thinks I should leave it natural. What do you think?

Layout of the Week #36- Incorporating Masking Tape in Your Layout

     I believe that I've already mentioned how I like to create with things that were not intended for scrapbooking. Today is no different. We'll be looking in the toolbox for. . .  masking tape!

Here's the layout we'll be creating. Can you see the masking tape?

 

When I plan the theme for layout of the week, I intend for you to be able to use products that you already have rather than having to go out and buy them. I know everybody loves to buy new stuff, but it's so nice to use up current supplies. . .which then gives us reason to go out shopping:)

 

Here's what you'll need to create it:

one piece of 12"x12" cardstock

masking tape

letter stickers for the title

a couple of embellishments to match your theme

adhesive

paper trimmer

8-9 photos

 

Start by placing your photos in a grid. You can leave about 3/4" from the top of the page. Leave about 4" at the bottom so we'll have room for a title and some journaling.

When you choose your photos, you'll want to choose some that can be trimmed to about 3"x 3". Mine are not exactly that size- I wanted to allow for an uneven tile look. Feel free to cut yours to exactly 3"x 3" if you prefer a cleaner, more linear look.

You may notice that my photo on the left bottom corner is actually about 5 " x 3 ". I couldn't crop it without losing too much of it, so I let one larger photo take the place of two smaller ones.

 

Now take a piece of masking tape and place it about 2/3 of the way across the page. My masking tape is 3/4" thick. I placed a second layer of tape on top of the first to make it stand out.

 

Next, you'll want to trim a piece of tape to 1/2". (I used my paper trimmer for this. I just stuck the tape right to it, cut it, then peeled it off.) Then place a second strip on top (if you did before) and cut a notch out of one end. Place this across the bottom of the photo in the top right corner. The tape should extend past the photo.

 

 

Add the title in the bottom right corner.

Place embellishments at the left edge of the top strip of masking tape and also in the upper right corner of the layout. I layered a file tab, another piece of masking tape, and a word sticker that says "competitive."

 

To finish it off, add your journaling at the bottom.

The masking tape looks pretty cool, huh?

 

Here is another example using blue painter's masking tape.

I actually used the exact same layout as the tutorial- I just chose different photos and colors. I wanted to show how easy it is to customize the layout.

 

     I hope these steps are easy to follow and inspire you to get out your scrapping supplies. If you follow this weekly post, you could complete one layout a week. I don't know about you, but that makes me all happy inside!

Recipe of the Week #46- Blackberry Cobbler

 

Blackberry Cobbler
1 stick butter, melted
1 1/4 cups plus 2 Tbsp sugar
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup milk
2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries (or bueberries, peaches, raspberries. . .)

Preheat the oven to 350. Grease a 3 quart baking dish with butter. Melt the butter in a microwave safe dish. In a separate bowl, whisk 1 cup of the sugar with the flour and milk. Whisk in the melted butter. Rinse the blackberries and pat dry. Pour the batter into the baking dish. Sprinkle the blackberries evenly over the top of the batter. Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar over the blackberries.

Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown and bubbly. When 10 minutes of cooking time remain, sprinkle the remaining 2 Tbsp sugar over the top.
