How I Turned A Cabinet Door Into Chalkboard Tray

I have a big stack of cabinet doors that I rescued from the curb.

Check out what I did with one of them. . .

 You'd never guess that this tray was once was a discarded old cabinet door.

I sanded the frame, then painted the center with chalkboard paint.

To finish it off, my hubby added some handles.

 

The final step was adding some felt sliders to the bottom on all four corners.

I think I could also prop it up on a counter and add a daily quote.

It's the perfect size for serving some drinks.

Thrifty Thursday #179

We took a quick trip to San Antonio earlier this week, and we stopped at an awesome junk shop.

I had read about it online and the pictures looked amazing. 

We followed the directions, but it was closed when we got there- even though we were there during it's advertised open hours. I called the number I found online and the owner answered.

He told me that he was on a run to get some more stuff for his shop, but he'd be back soon.

My hubby actually drove me all the way back there later so I could check it out.

We were on a mini vacation and I got to go junking. 

Does my hubby rock or what?

He actually had a great time looking around with me.

He even bought a few things.

He found this large ammo can.

It's 31"x 6"x 12".

How cool is it?
So cool that he got. . . 

two of them.
He paid $30 for both.
What a great deal!

I fell in love with this awesome old pulley.

How great is that color?

It's 14" tall. It cost $20.

I'm not sure just what I'll do with it yet, but I couldn't pass it up.

Any ideas?

My hubby also found an old book called The Radio Manual that he's super excited about. It's about radio frequencies and the electrical theory (sounds pretty dry to me:)
 It cost $10, and he said it's worth every penny.

Lovelies That I Love

We are in our final countdown before school starts.

Just 10 days left of freedom.

My kids do online public school (through K-12 Online School), so we do school at home 

although it's not traditional home schooling. 

We only need minimal supplies like notebooks, paper, and binders as the rest of our stuff 

like text books, microscopes, and science project items are shipped to us.

On that note, I thought I'd share with you some cute school-ish items that I found. . . 

This printable is great.

Not only can your child pose with it on the first day, you'll have all these details about this specific time. You could then save this in a scrapbook, photo album, or with his/her school papers for the year.

Is this not the coolest bag for school?

I love that it looks like a vintage military bag.

You can customize it with your own initials.

How about this pencil case?

It's made from fabric that looks like tape measures.

Love it!

I think this lunch sack is awesome.

Recipe of the Week #182- Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles
1 cup softened butter
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Topping
4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Cream butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Combine with the wet mixture. Mix well. Chill in the fridge for about an hour.  Then roll dough into balls and roll in cinnamon and sugar mixture. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 12-14 minutes.

These cookies are very good. I usually use my mother-in-law's recipe for these, but I'm always up for a new recipe. These went over great with my family.

Mini Album of the Week #59- Album Made From Envelopes

We took a camping trip in June and I've been itching to get the photos scrapped.

I had too many to just make a layout, so I came up with this mini album.

I made it using 10 business size envelopes.
For the front cover, I used part of the trail map that we got at the park. 
 

I attached all the envelopes by creating an accordion fold binding. 

 
 I started by deciding where my photos would go.
Some photos I cropped while some I left full size (4"x 6").

I tucked in the flaps of the envelopes so that I could use them as pockets to hold more pictures.
I trimmed ledger paper to fit inside each envelope.
Then I added photos and journaling to each ledger page.
Each piece of paper has a tab to make it pull out of the envelope easier.

On these photos I journaled directly on the photographs.
For most of the rest of my journaling, I wrote on small pieces of ledger paper and attached them to the layouts.

I added a few pieces of pattern paper on the pages that only contained one photo.

I added just one sticker to each two page layout.

On every page, I wrote down details and anecdotes from our trip.

On this page, I used a circle punch on the trail map for my embellishments.

Because there were so many pockets, I was able to add lots of photos to this mini album.

The last envelope holds a smaller trail map and a pamphlet from the park.
I also stapled two tickets to the left side of the envelope.

The back cover is another part of the trail map.

This mini album would be easy to replicate. If you don't want to go through the tedious step of creating an accordion fold, you could punch holes and bind them with office rings.

Think of what all you could do with an album like this!

Decorative Letter DIY

In this day and age it's easy to get overwhelmed with all that's on our to-do lists.

Taking a little time for ourselves is refreshing- so that we can get back to do what we need to do.:)

I find that I like to use my "me" time doing something crafty. 

I suggest that you try to take some time to be creative.

Here's a simple project to get you started.

Try your hand at making a decorative letter.

 

To make one, you need:

paper mache letter (mine is 8" tall)

large piece of pattern paper

paint

Mod Podge

2 paint brushes

sandpaper

fabric flower or ribbon

To start, paint the edges of the letter.

Once the paint dries, put your letter on the back of the pattern paper

 and trace around it leaving plenty of space. Then cut around those lines.

I lined mine up up at the top right corner to make it easier 

to get my paper on straight for the next step. 

 Cover the front of the letter with Mod Podge.

Lay the paper on top of the letter. 

I lined my paper up at the top left corner to make sure it was straight.

Press along the entire letter paying close attention to the edges to make sure all the paper adheres.

This is what it looks like from behind.

I feel working with a little extra paper around the edges allows me to cover the entire letter.

If I cut it exactly to size, I have to be sure to line it up exactly which is difficult to do on wet glue.

Carefully use your sandpaper along the edges to remove the excess paper.

Finally, add a flower or ribbon to your letter.

Here's a side view to show how painting the edges gives it a more finished look.

One of these would be a great gift for a teacher (with school themed paper),

for a baby shower or even for a house warming gift.

Thrifty Thursday #178

 I've been on a big dry spell with my secondhand shopping. 

I haven't found anything good at the thrift stores in awhile.

I even hit a few yard sales last weekend to no avail.

Just because I'm high and dry doesn't mean I can leave you that way,

so we're going to throwback and look at some good finds from Thrifty Thursday #71...

Last week I started showing you the treasures that I picked up while out of town. Here's the continuation of what I bought while thrifting on my girls' trip. . .

I found this awesome old baby scale for $3.99 and it's in great shape!

It's going to sit on one of my living room shelves with some old books stacked on it.

Then I found this cute set of plates that weren't priced. They had a tag on the bottom that said they were a set of 10, but all I could find were these six. I only wanted one, but I took the whole set to the check out and offered $2. The sales girl balked at first, then rang me up for $2.

Since I prefer my dishes mismatched, I now have some extra cute plates that I can give when I share baked goods.

I fell in love with this plate. I got two of them for a dollar apiece- one to use in a project and one to add to my mismatched dinner set. Love those turquoise flowers!

I love the brown etching on the side of this glass. I'm not sure what kind of glass this is, but I picked up two at $.69 apiece to use on projects.

My final purchase was this darling blouse for $3. I fell in love with the colors!

I know that you're probably thinking how strange it is that my friends and I were stopping at thrift stores on our trip. I believe that I may have had something to do with it. . . :) They didn't mind- they had a good time and found lots of good stuff, too.
